EJ Singler Stays Local Signs With Ducks

By admin | November 13, 2008

UO Media Release-

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Oregon men’s basketball coach Ernie Kent has announced the signing of E.J. Singler to a national letter of intent. Singler, a 6-6, 200-pound forward from South Medford High School in Medford, Ore., will begin playing for the Ducks in the fall of 2009.

“We’ve watched E.J. for the last three years now, and have really seen him blossom and come into his own as a leader,” Kent said. “He is one of the top players in the state and certainly someone who has the character and background – in terms of coaching – to be an outstanding player at this level.”

Singler, who is a senior at SMHS, averaged 20.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game in his junior campaign. He was a first team all-conference and second team all-state selection a year ago. He led the Panthers to a sixth-place finish at the OSAA Class 6A state tournament, where he earned first team all-tournament recognition.

First Game Jitters and Observations

By admin | November 3, 2008

Well, I guess it is now officially basketball season. Strange, when did late summer turn into the later half of fall? None the less the sweaty gym full of the smell of pop corn and hot dogs filled the air of Mac Court early Sunday evening as the Ducks took on Northwest Christian University from just down the street in Eugene.

The starting lineup went as followed: Sophomore Kamyron Brown at PG, Junior Tajuan Porter at SG, Sophomore LeKendric Longmire at SF, Junior Joevan Catron at PF, and Senior Frantz Dorsainvil at Center.

The first unit looked rough around the edges as there didn’t seem to be any type of floor general or go-to guy on the floor.

Catron was showing his likeness for the perimeter game and his “and1″ like dribbling skills. All in all Catron was just like last year where he was solid at times, great at times, and very average at times all during the same game.

Porter wasn’t trying to get into the game’s box sheet much and instead was focusing on getting everyone else involved early. That might be a good thing but for this Duck team right now it is a bad team. We will need 25 shots from TP right now if we want to win the big games. Sadly that’s also a bad issue as Porter can get a tad wild with his shots. Midway through the second half he picked his shots well and ended the game on a nice scoring run.

Dorsainvil was just as average as he was last year and we saw no improvement what’s so ever in his game.

Longmire was solid at best. Showed solid defense but his outside jump shot which needed major help last season didn’t seem to be improved much. Still, his slashing ability and his good defense will keep him on the floor.

Brown looked improved at times and at other times looked like a wide eyed freshman. I can’t recall any outside jumpers from Brown so we don’t know if he’s improved in that area. He did trim down his “and1″ type passes that were out of control from last year which is a plus. Still the team’s best passer as he did aww the crowd a few times.

When the big freshman class made their debut the place was electric and you could tell the eight thousand or so people were here for them.

Michael Dunigan is very long and very agile when compared to recent Duck post players. He also seemed to lose a lot of his baby fat he had during the all-star games on TV last spring. He didn’t look 255 pounds to me. However he was able to command the paint and end up with what seemed like 5 to 7 blocked shots. Also showed a good seal off move and then pivoted for the dunk midway through the second. Dunigan won’t be a 20/10 type player but 12/10 is certainly possible for this young freshman.

Fellow freshman post Josh Crittle showed great rebound instinct and was also a player that could time his blocks well. Like Dunigan, Crittle also showed poise around the basket and was athletic. Like Dunigan Crittle won’t be a 20/10 type player but will be a solid player off the bench that can score in a few different ways around the hoop and play solid defense.

Freshman Matt Humphrey is a long and athletic wing that showed a good outside jump shot and more importantly showed his smart basketball IQ. Late in the game on a NCC score he released up court on defense to get a jump on the transition defense and was found by Brown for a nice dunk. If he could develop a consistent outside jumper he will see the floor. Showed smart defense.

Teondre Williams reminds me of Longmire. Long and very athletic but is lacking in his jumper which isn’t the norm for Oregon guards. Williams showed there is potential for him to be a major player in the paint as a “slasher” type wing for the Ducks if he can learn to finish. Like Dunigan Williams used his long arms to cause havoc on defense and to get a few blocks.

Portland product Garrett Sim showed some flashes as a freshman but didn’t do anything in particularly special anywhere on the court. However, he didn’t make any mistakes and played overall solid basketball. Might want to redshirt him but he can contribute if he does play this season.

Springfield product Drew Wiley showed athletic ability but seemed just a tad more dominate than the player he was guarded/guarding. A redshirt is a must for this freshman.

The second of the two Seniors Churchill Odia showed great length on defense and like last year didn’t try to do too much on offense and focused on solid but not great defense. Will be a guy that will play the 2/3/4 spots in my opinion this year for the Ducks.

Junior LSU transfer Ben Vgood didn’t show much and left me wondering why he got a scholarship and how eh started a few times for the LSU Tigers a few years ago. I am going to give him the benefit of doubt and label this just a shaky first game as a Duck.

Overall this game was exactly what I thought it would be. Rough in the first half with so many new faces and then our athletic ability would simply take over some time in the second half. Sure enough it did and the Ducks won big. The score however didn’t show how truly close it was through the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second. Porter led all scorers with 24 points and was helped by Dunigan(11), Dorsainvil(11), and Humphrey(10). Shockingly NCC beat us on the boards which was due to Oregon getting out of position for the rebound due to attempts at blocking shots.  The team was jittery and expected as eight of the 15 players are freshman. Fan’s shouldn’t come into Mac and expecting blow outs night in and night out. There will be some big wins for this team but there will also be some close wins and more importantly some close losses.

Here are some game quotes

Head Coach Ernie Kent
“It’s always good to play another team. You can learn a lot about yourself from playing
someone else.”
“It was a tough team for our big guys. Typically they won’t be guarding that kind of
player. When we play more traditional teams it will be easier for them.”
“I don’t think we understand transition from offense to defense as fast as we want to. We
also need to work on free throw shooting. We have only learned about ¼ of the things we
would like to offensively, just because we have to go slowly. We have a lot of new guys
so there is a lot of teaching to do.”
“We are learning. We know the tempo we want to have and the work we have to do. We
will get done what we need to get done. We will create an identity from a diversity of
different games.”
“It was a good game, and we’re going to get better. We have a tough road ahead without
preseason games.”
On Porter:
“I think it’s unfair to put too much pressure on one individual. There are several leaders
on this team; it is not the job of one person. Tajuan can turn it up another notch and
involve everyone in the game. And it’s good that he understands how to do that.”
#33 Michael Dunigan
“I was actually nervous, but after all, the first time was good. I couldn’t do much better.
Offensively, I felt like I didn’t get my shots close enough, so that’s something to work
on. We are a young team and we are still trying to figure out what each of us is doing,
both offensively and defensively. It’s all about teamwork. Defense needs to talk more so
that we communicate better out there.”
#12 Tajuan Porter
“It felt good to finally play, have the new teammates go out there, and perform in front of
their families, friends, and fans. It was just the first game, and we need to continue to get
better. All of our players did a good job today. I’m the veteran guy. It’s my job and
responsibility to talk to them, and help them if they need it. As far as playing better, I
need to penetrate more.”

Mike Moser In Contact With Oregon

By admin | October 24, 2008

ULCA, UW, ASU, and Oregon have all been in contact with Moser after he has decided to open things back up. This is per 1080 “The Fan” in Portland, OR.

Moser was slated to take a visit to UA this weekend. That visit is still up in the area I believes because Moser doesnt wants to go. His mom had to buy a plane ticket well in advance and they cant get a refund. So they either eat the loss of the ticket or they go on the visit.

Stay tuned for more news on this recruitment of the 11th best SF in the 2009 call for basketball.
