Pop has always had political opinions and expressed them. It's nothing new for him. I'm happy to hear coaches speak on political issues. Sports isn't just for "dumb jock" talk. Lot of athletes have a deeper message than the sound bites some of you are trying to reduce them to. I've heard Coach Leach talk politics plenty, and I'm glad to listen to his rants too, and they are plenty empty on their face. To insist people shouldn't share their ideas on politics seems ridiculous to me.

Even people on the Right know our current president is a trip into bizzaro-world and it's an insane culture that allowed him to come to power. His whole life is nothing but a rejection of the conservative values the Right built itself upon. People are going to have opinions about that. I mean, it's not even really a political stance. Many of my Republican friends and family can't believe Trump is what we've come to.

fantastic game last night.

edit: i'm going to keep the politics to a minimum here, i realize this isn't the board for it, but: i love steve kerr. and pop. kerr speaking out on the madness we endure every day in this country is so great. pop won't give up a 2-second soundbyte to talk about his team, but he'll openly discuss social issues to anyone who listens. we need more kerrs and pops.
Considering none of them spoke out like this previously, I really can't stand it. It's short sighted commentary that ignored any previous state action but then I've noticed myself watching less and less sports now as everyone tries to show off how big their egos are. Pop in particular says some stupid stuff.
Have to agree with you.

Yeah, because Paul, Marco, Mitch and Ted are bastions of ethics, morals and humanity. What was that sound? Another check from the NRA in each of their pockets funding another child being murdered in Algebra 2.

Uh. None of those people voted for the bizzaro-in-chief. You wanted the dude. You were willing to accept anything to have the dude. Part of that is accepting that people are going to have something to say about the dude. He belongs to all of us now, but the people who voted for him can't pretend anybody but them are responsible. And if Gregg Popovich decides Trump is the line he's not going to accept that's a pretty reasonable line to draw, and he doesn't need to shut up about it.

considering kerr's personal history, his perspective is also uniquely interesting.
No, I just never heard Pop talk about all the foreigners we killed on a weekly basis during the previous administration and how the rule of law was routinely circumvented and what that is so outrageous. I really enjoy the part where the coaches routinely bring up the Authorized Use of Military Force as a psuedo declaration of war and the effect that this has had on our foreign policy.

I also like how all these athletes who don't graduate or read a book while in school then go and speak out against these social injustices in American society because they don't know squat about the rest of the world so they think these are the greatest problems in the world. Black Lives Matter all right, just the pampered ones in the US while a new genocide is happening in post Gaddafi Libya.

There are symptoms and there are causes. When people rage against symptoms and ignore the causes, I can't take them seriously. It's also a reminder that when you point a finger, you've got 3 pointing right back at you.
So Pop's long history of talking about politics doesn't count because he doesn't talk about the issues you care about? What a dumb take.

And you have no idea who reads books or knows anything about the world. I'm pretty sure Pop and Kerr have a much better sense of how the world works than you do.

None of what you said went over my head. I know exactly what you are doing. You are trying to pretend the bizzaro-in-chief's rise to power is the fault of the "Libtards". You are passing the buck. You don't want to take responsibility for the insane dude you voted in. He's your surrogate daddy in charge. Not the majority of Americans who didn't vote for him.

Ahh yes, because the choices we have are so great. That's part of the problem I have whenever people just want to say "Hillary this or Trump that" is that it ignores that the status quo continues the same and has been the same for some time now.

As far as no one ever talking about Kissinger's policies and how they effect our lives back home, I don't expect people to understand the importance of these issues because they don't have the time to consider them, let alone immerse themselves in it. We live a way of life that calls for another way of living.

I am somewhat sympathetic to the point you are trying to make here, but this is old as mankind itself. By your rigid standards, every leader who ever was is a criminal. And that might be true. But tough decisions have to be made. Foreign policy is a rabbit hole of soul selling compromises and devil dealing that's impossible to detangle. Maybe domestic policy too. The American voter can control one thing, who's name the check the box next to. The GOP had 20 people to chose from. They went with this guy. A lot of them just to stick a finger in the eye of American politics and knowing full well exactly who/what they were voting into office. There was nothing altruistic about their votes, at least not for most of them. It was a simple act of destruction. A willingness to accept the personification of every moral failing you've grown up being warned about...all just to pitch a fit. I don't have much sympathy for people who don't like it when others criticize that choice. To my mind, this isn't a Left vs. Right thing. It's a what's wrong to the point a guy like this even gets within a million miles of being an option for either party. Everybody in the country shares some blame, no doubt, by allowing compromise to be turned into a treasonous act in the public debate. But whatever way of life you think is being called for it's not coming via this route, and whatever failings we have as a citizenry, basic common sense takes one look at this guy and turns it's head away in disgust. And we said: Please rule us.

BTW, I think one area where most of America's citizens comes together is we'd like to less involved in "Kissinger's trappings". People may not be able to recognize them, or fully understand the history, but most everybody wants out of the complexities of Foreign issues. Every poll shows that.

First, I don't have Liberal heroes. Second, your facts are wrong consistently. Obama made the Bush tax cuts permanent. He raised taxes to help with Obamacare, but only the richest 1% had their taxes go up. Middle income paid the same rate under Obama. Lower incomes got a reduced tax rate. The "liberals" had majorities in the House and Senate for 2 years. All they got out of it was a spending bill to try and help us get out of a recession and health care plan inspired by the Heritage Foundation and supported by Republicans back when HillaryCare was being proposed and later used by Romney in Massachusetts. Obamacare was a Republican health care plan and as about as centrist and politically middle-of-the-road as it is possible to make a health plan. Democrats have been advocates of health care for 50+ years. And they finally used a GOP plan to try and scratch the surface and suddenly Obama is a Socialist radical. Democrats have always favored reducing military expenses and using tax base, especially for the Nation's richest, to help pay the bills. Obama didn't even put a dent in any of that. He's completely middle-of-the road and verging on the Regan-era GOP at times. Whatever your take on how President Obama handled Ferguson, and issues of police brutality, it's part of a long, historical narrative. These issues have always been around. It's not like you have to go running to Trump Daddy because the former president questioned the police. It's so weird to me that Trumpers think Obama was/is some kind of crazy Isis Socialist Libtard weirdo destructor of planets. He was a centrist arguing for the same agenda Democrats have been in favor of since the 1960's. He barely made a dent. I don't agree with every decision he ever made. But he certainly is no Looney Tunes radical. If Obamacare and Ferguson are your best reasons for running into the arms of Trump Daddy, that's a pretty low tolerance level.

I see people in this thread talking about his 'long history', and I admit that i haven't followed his political opinions over the years, but I don't see anyone providing any examples before 2016. And I am apparently not the only one.
Cillizza: Prior to 2016, Popovich seemed content to coach basketball and not offer a whole lot of thoughts about politics. Is his outspokenness now all about Trump? Or something else?

Can anyone give me a few examples of this long history you keep referring to?

Thanks.

I don't see what it matters, he's allowed to speak his mind. But sure, I googled and found this article is from 2013, which also cites some other times he's gotten engaged in politics in some form. https://sports.yahoo.com/spurs-coach-gr ... html?y20=1
