Best 2nd Rounders of the Past 5 Drafts (2029-2033)

Post by The Bean Regime »

Often seen as mostly trash, the second round is often ignored by general managers. Many general managers even give away their second-round picks for nothing but good wishes. As a fan of the second round myself, I was curious as to the quality of talent available so late. The stats in this article are accurate as of Sim 14 (71-75) for the 2033 DASL season. Without further ado, here are some honorable mentions that did not quite make the top-10.

Honorable mentions:
Absimov Coles: C 19 C+ C D+ B- C+ C
7.9/4.7/0.9/0.5/0.5 and 0.9 TOPG in 17.6 MPG

Marcus Johnson: PG 25 C A- B- A- C- B
4.3/1.4/2.2/0.5/0.1 and 1.2 TOPG in 9.5 MPG

Randy Schneekloth: PG 22 C- B A- B+ D+ C
6.1/1.3/2.6/0.6/0.0 and 1.2 TOPG in 12.8 MPG

And now, for the actual list.

#10) Maxwell Postell: SF 21 B- B+ C C+ C D
Drafted #40 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2032 DASL draft
Drafted Ratings: SF 20 B- A- C C C C
Season Stats: 12.2/5.1/2.0/1.0/0.4 and 1.8 TOPG in 31.3 MPG
Postell is currently starting for the 15-34 Cleveland Cavaliers. Already seen as a player who has reached his potential, Postell will likely be fighting for a roster spot most seasons. While he’s not particularly good at anything, he has a well-balanced game with range on his shot. The fact that he’s getting so many minutes now and is showing respectable production should be enough to keep him from an early retirement.

#9) Dustin Hughes: SG 24 A- B- C- C D+ D
Drafted at #41 overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2031 DASL draft
Drafted Ratings: SG 22 A- B- D+ C C- D
Season Stats: 13.9/3.1/1.3/1.0/0.3 and 1.2 TOPG in 24.7 MPG
In a similar mold to Jadon Jones, Hughes is a guard that has great scoring ability and nothing else. He is currently backup SG/SF for the 19-31 Denver Nuggets, and is his first season not starting for the team. His inside-oriented game will make his future employment opportunities slim, but he should be able to find takers if he can keep his current efficiency.

#8) Treylan Beamer: PG 26 C- B+ B- A- C- D
Drafted #47 overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2030 DASL draft.
Drafted Ratings: PG 23 C- B C+ B+ C- B
Season Stats: 11.2/4.2/6.3/1.3/0.3 and 1.9 TOPG in 34.9 MPG
While he doesn’t look like much from here, he is currently the starter at PG for the 37-15 76ers. He doesn’t have any flash to his game, but he provides good defense and efficiency while being able to shoot a few 3’s a game. Even so, the 76ers are bottom 10 in APG. Beamer simply doesn’t offer enough playmaking to be more than a fringe-starter.

#7) Bailey McAdoo SG 23 B A- C C+ C C
Drafted #41 overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2032 DASL draft
Drafted Ratings: SG 22 B B+ C C C C
Season Stats: 6.0/1.7/0.8/0.6/0.0 and 0.5 TOPG in 9.7 MPG
While he looks quite good, McAdoo is held back by the lack of minutes on the 33-23 Pacers. He is showing 22.3 points per 36 on great efficiency and 2.2 steals per 36. While his potential doesn’t seem to be much higher, where he stands now would be able to fit in at both the backup SG/SF slots for competing teams.

#6) Erick Keaney SG 23 B- B+ C B+ D C
Drafted at #33 overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2032 DASL draft
Drafted Ratings: SG 22 B- B C B- D B
Season Stats: 10.0/2.8/1.0/2.5/0.3 and 1.2 TOPG in 31.3 MPG
It’s a little out of nowhere, but Keaney is #9 on the league’s steal leaderboards starting for the 15-39 San Antonio Spurs. While those numbers are impressive, he hasn’t shown enough outside of the steals to rank any higher. His scoring is alright, but he has less than a 1.0 a/to ratio. Furthermore, his complete lack of rebounding makes playing him at backup SF a risky choice. If he doesn’t improve either of those skillsets enough, he’ll be stuck as a player who cannot start at SG for a playoff team and cannot play the sixth-man role.

#5) Terrance Semjonova: PG 23 C C+ A A C- D
Drafted #31 overall by the New York Knicks in the 2032 DASL draft
Drafted Ratings: PG 22 C C A A- C- C
Season Stats: 8.3/2.4/3.9/0.8/0.3 and 0.7 TOPG in 16.7 MPG
Currently playing backup to Zion Harmon on the 34-20 Thunder, Semjonova is showing excellent offensive aptitude in both playmaking and scoring. While his steal numbers are lower than you’d expect from a defensive PG of his caliber, his absurd efficiency make him a very attractive backup option. Much like many of the defensive point guards before him, his lack of range will severely limit his starting opportunities.

#4) Deion George SG 21 B+ B C+ C+ C- B
Drafted at #35 overall by the Miami Heat in the 2033 DASL draft.
Drafted Ratings: SG 21 B+ B- C C C- B
Season Stats: 12.4/2.8/1.9/1.4/0.4 and 2.2 TOPG in 28.5 MPG
A rookie, Deion George is already making the most of his opportunity on the 15-36 Heat squad. Although he has only played 31 of the Heat’s 51 games, George has shown an excellent foundation as a scorer. His mediocre rebounding and terrible 0.86 a/to ratio are knocks, but he should outgrow those with experience.

#3) Adam Grier: C 25 B- D+ C+ B B+ B
Drafted at #39 overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2030 DASL draft
Drafted Ratings: C 22 C+ D C C+ B- A
Season Stats: 12.9/10.1/2.7/0.8/1.0 and 1.7 TOPG in 31.2 MPG
Scouted as a very strong big with great potential, Grier has improved splendidly from where he started. He is currently starting at C for the 12-41 Utah Jazz. Despite his B- inside grade, Grier is putting out a respectable point total while keeping his efficiency high. His lack of blocking and range will likely keep him out of any starting lineups on playoff teams, but he should work fine as a bench big.

#2) Stephan Maxwell: PF 23 B+ C C B- B+ C
Drafted at #31 overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2030 DASL draft.
Drafted Ratings: PF 20 B- C C- C+ B B
Season Stats: 13.0/10.7/2.1/1.1/0.4 and 1.8 TOPG in 30.2 MPG
Maxwell is currently starting on the 19-31 Denver Nuggets squad. While he lacks blocking and an overall grasp of defense, his post-game will keep him around the league for many years. This is his first season as a starter, although he attended the rookie all-star game in his second season playing a measly 46 minutes.

#1) Antonio House: SG 22 C+ A C+ B+ D+ B
Drafted at #32 overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2031 DASL draft.
Drafted ratings: SG 20 C+ B C C+ D A
Season Stats: 20.0/4.3/4.2/2.8/0.4 and 2.2 TOPG in 34.9 MPG
Easily the best of the bunch, House went from 95 minutes played over two seasons to a $40m over 4-year contract and a starting spot on the 30-17 Kings. Most 2nd rounders are ideally potential role players, but House is a potential star.

Interesting article. I thought there would be more contributors but it seems the majority of the players are on lottery bound teams and not taking a bench role for a contending team.

Yeah that surprised me too. Maybe if I go back to the 5 years after there'd be more success stories after more development. I narrowed the selection by this season's stats, so I imagine that would narrow the older guys by even more, since if they're still getting minutes in their 6-10th seasons they must be at least decent.

Something to do next season I suppose.

9-0 in favor of +5 is hopefully enough. Thanks guys!

Chris Paul, in order of preference left-to-right
+5 Jumpshot, Inside, 3PT, Passing, Steals, Handles, Strength, Perimeter D. Jumping

if that earlier +3 disqualifies him (don't know if there are any limits per season or per player or anything such), then do

Mathew Bee
+5 3PT, Jumpshot, Inside, Steals, Perimeter D, Drive D, Quickness, Strength
