Mavericks Draft Classes Through the Years (Part 1)

Post by Oregon Ownage »

Lets take a trip down memory lane and see how successful or unsuccessful a GM has been with drafting players since the start of the league. Could I remember all players that I drafted? How did their careers turn out? Who was the biggest bust in franchise history?

1989
#7 Nick Anderson SG 6'6'' 205 21 B C C C C- A
Nick played many seasons for me but never lived up to his lottery potential. It also helps to know that he was one of the few players I knew in this draft and might have blinded me when picking. He was soon out of the league after his rookie contract expired. Look at the players below who I could have selected, imagine how different things could have been. Barros in a Mavericks jersey would have been amazing.
P.S. – You might notice a trend developing here

Verdict: Bust

Players selected after Nick include: #8 PF Dino Radja, #9 PG Pooh Richardson, #10 PG Dana Barros

1990
#13 Loy Vaught PF 6'9'' 240 23 B+ C- D C+ C+ B
Vaught was the leading man for my team for close to a decade. Turned into an all star and helped propel my team from the lottery to the playoffs in a couple of seasons. One of my favorite players to this day.

Verdict: Success

1991
#9 Pete Chilcutt PF 6'10'' 230 23 C+ B D+ C C+ A
#11 Rick Fox SF 6'7'' 230 22 C+ C+ C- C+ C A
#23 LaBradford Smith SG 6'3'' 200 22 C+ C C C+ C A
#25 Nate Roberson C 7'1'' 313 22 C+ C- C C C+ A
Wow, talk about a bad draft. All failed to amount to anything and were quickly traded/released before their rookie contracts were up. I couldn’t even manage a rotation player with four picks…..

Verdict: Busts

Players I could have selected: #10 SF Richard Dumas, #13 PF Dale Davis, #17 Vincenzo Esposito, #24 C Bison Dele, #26 PG Kenny Anderson

1992
No first round pick

1993
#12 Harold Ellis SG 6'5'' 200 23 C+ C+ C C+ C A
Still trying to find a SG to complement my team so I took Ellis and you can guess what happens next. He was traded before his rookie contract expired.

Verdict: Bust

1994
No first round pick

1995
No first round pick

1996
#20 Jerome Williams PF 6'9'' 206 23 C+ C- D C+ C+ A
At this point in the franchise, Loy Vaught was still dominating but I went with the best player available with the 20th pick. It took Jerome two seasons to get adjusted to the DASL but turned out to be a very good piece for my team as a rotation player between the 3 and 4 spots. He was a staple in this league was many years.

Verdict: Success

1997
#22 Alain Digbeu SG 6'6'' 220 22 C+ C+ C C+ C A
Still searching for that SG to complete my team and struck out again with Digbeu. I have no luck drafting SG’s and looking back at it, I never even realized it. Was out of the league very quickly.

Verdict: Bust

1998
No fist round pick

1999
#19 James Posey
I believe at this time I had Scottie Pippen at the three so I was looking to get a depth piece. Posey was an alright player in this league but never developed for me.

Verdict: Bust

2000
#12 Darius Miles SF 6'9'' 210 19 C+ C- D C+ C+ A
Same logic as the previous year and a look towards to the future. What can go wrong picking a 19 year old Darius Miles? Well clearly, he didn’t work out for my team at the three and was soon traded/released. He eventually was moved to PF and had a decent career there.

Verdict: Bust

2001
#18 Jamaal Tinsley PG 6'3'' 195 23 C C+ B- C+ D A
#28 Horace Jenkins PG 6'1'' 180 27 C+ C C+ C- C- A
Searching for a PG who can lead the line and distribute. Unfortunately, neither one of these players made the cut but Tinsley hung around the league for a couple of seasons.

Verdict: Busts

For the first 13 years of drafting in DASL, I hit on 2 picks out of 13 for a success rate of 15%! :(

For lottery picks, I have 1 for 6 for a rate of 16%. No wonder I had to trade for established players early on, I was terrible at picking from the best players available.

When I began playing, I was as green as you can get and was still learning the ropes of everything but even so, only hitting on 2 picks for 13 years is horrible.

Best Success: Loy Vaught

Worst Bust: 1991 Draft, 4 picks and couldnt get anything

I will follow this up later with the remaining years to see if I improved or stayed the same. I cant get worse, can I?

Cool article. Vaught was 20/10 machine for a decade, he was a really good pick. Jerome Williams had a couple good years. I think he may have led the league in rebounds one year.

I remember Vaught. Tried trading for him a few times I think if memory serves me correctly. Wanted to pair him with Shaq.
