2021 Draft 1st Training Camp Report

Post by Zyme »

Life got bloody busy with school, but better late than never one could say.

Best Picks:
1) Ball, everything you want out of a #1
6) Brown, ROY from #6, need I say more?
15) Perry, 15 reb/36

Concerning picks: As usual I will never label anyone a bust one year out of the gate but some have some legitimate concerns to be mentioned.
7) Lynn Greer, midrange issues
13) Moses Brown, bad TC
Nuggets draft class
29) Huffman, No progress

1. Miami Heat | LaMelo Ball SG 6'4'' 193 B+ B- C B C- A
1. Miami Heat | LaMelo Ball SG 6'4'' 193 B+ B+ C B+ C- A
+2 Out, +1 def
He didn't win rookie of the year but he had a great rookie campaign. At 18/5 in the 2-guard position and shot over .460 his future looks bright With the first pick you really want to take as safe of player as possible as you do not want this player to bust and this year the safe pick was the great pick who certainly has lived up to expectations. Very solid first year and look poised to for a long and prosperous career. His gains in outside and defense will serve him extremely well going forward.

2. Minnesota Timberwolves | Shareef O'Neal PF 6'10'' 235 B C C B- B- A
2. Minnesota Timberwolves | Shareef O'Neal PF 6'10'' 235 B+ C C B+ B+ A
+1 in, +2 def, +2 reb
While he showed great progress in training camp, he struggled during the year. He showed good footwork on the practice court but it only turned into just short of 9 rebounds in a team with not a lot or rebounds besides. Scoring wise he was also a tad concerning as while he got nearly 16 points per game he struggled to find a consistent stroke at a .434 clip. Based on his progression in training camp, he has plenty of room left to improve and should be a high-end performer for years to come.

3. Atlanta Hawks | Ahmed Khalaf C 6'10'' 225 B- C D C+ B- A
3. Atlanta Hawks | Ahmed Khalaf C 6'10'' 225 B C D+ B B+ A
+1 In, +1 Hand, +2 Def, +2 Reb
You want to talk about significant progress and one of the most impressive training camp progressions in recent memory, look no further than Khalaf. Similar to O'Neal, this did not turn into production this season on the court. Playing the role of the primary back post at 24 minutes per game he had a solid 7.8 rebounds but a very concerning 7.8 ppg and only shot .434 from the floor. A similar case to be made here as with O'Neal, he has a to of room left to grow and is one to watch for some time to come.

4. Houston Rockets | Nassir Little SF 6'6'' 228 B B+ C B+ C- B
4. Houston Rockets | Nassir Little SF 6'6'' 228 B B+ C B+ C- A
±0, - pot
You take the good with the bad here and his progression couple with his performance on the court leaves a great deal of concern. He made little progression during camp and even looked as if he lost some top end room to grow. However, he did have a decent first season, scoring at a .457/.839/.431. These numbers are promising, but he only scored 13 points in 23 minutes. A level of caution is to be warranted with Little

5. Seattle SuperSonics | Darius Garland PG 6'2'' 182 C B- B C+ C- A
5. Seattle SuperSonics | Darius Garland PG 6'2'' 182 C B B+ B- C- B
+1 Out, +1 Hand, +1 Def, -pot
Garland had solid progression and I am sure he is ready to build upon it. He worked on his outside, handling and his defense during camp and had a solid rookie campaign to match. He averaged a passable 2.6 TOs in 23 minutes while maintaining a very solid .463 shooting percentage. While scouts think he may have lost a little to his top end potential, he looks like a long-term starter in the league as it stands right now.

6. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Raptors) | Jordan Brown PF 6'10'' 225 B+ C+ C B+ C+ B
6. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Raptors) | Jordan Brown PF 6'10'' 225 B+ C+ C A- C+ B
+1 Def
The win-now prospect blew away all expectations, surging to over 20 points per game and a unanimous pick for rookie of the year. He started out by making a fair amount of progress on the defensive end of his game but followed it up with shooting .465, nearly 80% from the free throw line and even mixed it up with signs he can stretch the floor out to the 3pt line if you left him open. He played on an emptied T-Wolves team and it will be interesting where he ends up as the wolves reload.

7. New Jersey Nets | Lynn Greer III PG 6'3'' 199 C C+ C B+ C- A
7. New Jersey Nets | Lynn Greer III PG 6'3'' 199 C C+ C A- C A
+1 Def
Very concerning progression and performance out of the 7th pick. He only made small gains in his defense and also had an awful midrange performance. He seemed to show flashes of finishing at the rim in additions to a solid stroke form outside, the free-throw line extended eluded him all season with his .587 clip. His defense will keep him employed but his very concerning performance looks to have relegated him to backup duty for the foreseeable future.

8. Detroit Pistons | Aaron Wiggins SF 6'6'' 204 B- B- C B- C B
8. Detroit Pistons | Aaron Wiggins SF 6'6'' 204 B- B- C B C B
+1 Def
The win now prospect out of Maryland had a rather quiet first season in camp and on the court. He only made slight progression on his defense during camp and during the season he provided 9 points in 20 minutes at a respectable .476 overall with .417 from beyond the arc. He looks to have a future as, at worst, a solid backup off the bench for many years to come.

9. Boston Celtics | Anfernee Simons SG 6'3'' 200 C+ A- C+ C+ C- A
9. Boston Celtics | Anfernee Simons SG 6'3'' 200 C+ B+ C+ C+ C- A
-1 Out
Bad news for the Celtics Simons made very little progress this season, but the good news is that he already is set up to be a solid contributor off the bench for years to come. The outside sniper hit .426 from behind the arc and did his job efficiently inside as well with ,460total shooting personage. Overall there is some room for concern given the lack of progression but solid nonetheless.

10. Utah Jazz | Charles Bassey C 6'10'' 235 C- D+ C B B- A
10. Utah Jazz | Charles Bassey C 6'10'' 235 C- D+ C A- B+ A

Very solid first year from the post out of Baylor. He was kind of a one trick pony, but his one trick was executed very effectively. Playing 21 minutes and getting an exceptional 7 rebounds per (12 per 36). While he likely never be the all-around stud, his combination of skill will end up a starter, or at worst, a rotational option, for a long time to come.

11. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Cavaliers via Raptors) | Louis King SF 6'8'' 205 C+ C+ C- A- D A
11. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Cavaliers via Raptors) | Louis King SG 6'8'' 205 B- B- C- A- D+ A
+1 In, +1 Out
One of the players that was moved by the Raptors to make it to the quarter finals, King had a limited year for the Timberwolves. In camp he made steady progress improving both his inside and his outside production. Shooting barely over 400, he showed flashes from behind the arc. His real weakness was his midrange

12. Portland Trailblazers | Taeshon Cherry SF 6'8'' 210 22 C+ B+ C+ B C- B
12. Portland Trailblazers | Taeshon Cherry SF 23 6'8'' 210 B- B C+ B+ C- C

The late lottery prospect had a mixed bag out of training camp but was able to ultimately prove a lot of doubters wrong. He made gains in his insdie and defense at the cost of his potential and his outside shooting stroke. He was able to get himself starter’s minutes and with it came 17 ppg and 5 rebounds per. His outside shooting was by far his best asset as he was able to maintain a .357 three-point stroke with a developing midrange game. Very good signs out of this kid.

13. Charlotte Hornets (from Los Angeles Lakers) | Moses Brown C 7'0'' 220 C+ C- D+ B B- A
13. Charlotte Hornets (from Los Angeles Lakers) |Moses Brown C 7'0'' 220 B- C- D B C+ B
+1 In, -1 Hand, -1 Reb, -pot.
At the end of the lottery we encounter on of our first true concerns. You take risks down here and certainly not panned out in this case. Putting up around 10/10 per 36 his decline across multiple categories in exchange for inside progression is not enviable.

14. Chicago Bulls | Matur Maker SF 6'10'' 205 B- C D+ C+ C A
14. Chicago Bulls | Matur Maker SF 6'10'' 205 B- C C- B- C A
+1 Hand, +1 Def
Hard to judge as Maker didn’t get any playing time within the crowded backcourt of the Bulls. Solid progression out of camp in both his handling and his defense. Probably a few years out from truly contributing.

15. Toronto Raptors (from Bucks) | Reggie Perry PF 6'9'' 220 21 B- C- C B- B+ B
15. Toronto Raptors (from Bucks) | Reggie Perry PF 22 6'9'' 220 B- C- C B- A- C
+1 Reb, -Pot
15 rebounds per 36. That should be more than enough to keep Perry employed for a couple of decades to come in some post rotation. His shooting percentages are not amazing, nor is 1.1 turnovers in only 17 minutes but he has skills to pay the bills at the very least.

16. Washington Bullets | Tristan Clark PF 6'9'' 238 B+ C C C+ B B
16. Washington Bullets | Tristan Clark PF 6'9'' 238 B C+ C C+ B B
-1 In, +1 Out
Mixed bag by Clarks in training camp as he seemed to begin to settle more for the midrange shot rather than finishing at the hoop like he did in college. That being said, he was able to get full starter’s minutes and at .451 and 9.7 rebounds. He needs more time to develop and, given his last TC, he may not have it in him to get there.

17. San Antonio Spurs | Elijah Weaver PG 6'4'' 201 C C+ C B D- A
17. San Antonio Spurs | Elijah Weaver PG 6'4'' 201 C B- C+ B+ D- B
+1 Out, +1 Hand, +1 Def, -Pot
Walker had a solid first training camp and a good first season. He didn’t score particularly amazing from the backup guard positions but was able to keep his turnovers very low (only one per game)

18. Houston Rockets (from Clippers) | Jahvon Quinerly PG 6'0'' 172 C C B B+ C B
18. Houston Rockets (from Clippers) | Jahvon Quinerly PG 6'0'' 172 C C B B C B
-1 Def
Extreme concerns here from Quinerly. He made noticeable losses in camp in his defense and provided nothing on the court (4.5 TOs and .364/.565/.190).

19. Golden State Warriors (from Pacers) | Nate Laszewski C 6'10'' 209 B C C- B- C+ B
19. Golden State Warriors (from Pacers) | Nate Laszewski C 6'10'' 209 B+ C C- B C B
+1 In, +1 Def, -1 Reb.
You never want to see a slide in rebounding from a center. Otherwise solid progressing. Will need a few more years of progression to become a solid rotation option.

20. Denver Nuggets (from Knicks) | Mikeal Brown-Jones PF 6'9'' 227 B C C C C A
20. Denver Nuggets (from Knicks) | Mikeal Brown-Jones PF 6'9'' 227 B C C C C B

Not really another way to put it but the Nuggets took a flier on a developmental player and whiffed again.

21. Chicago Bulls (from Kings) | David McCormack C 6'10'' 255 C C C- B- B B
21. Chicago Bulls (from Kings) | David McCormack C 6'10'' 255 C C C B B+ B

Solid progression in TC, poor season in limited minutes with shooting below the Mendoza line.

22. Utah Jazz (from Suns) | Marek Dolezaj SF 6'9'' 220 C B+ C B- D B
22. Utah Jazz (from Suns) | Marek Dolezaj SF 6'9'' 220 C A- C+ B- D B

Solid progressions from the Slovak out of Syracuse. Wasn’t asked to do much as he only played backup minutes and shot an outstanding 500 clip.

23. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Warriors) | Quentin Grimes SG 6'5'' 210 C B C+ B D+ B
23. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Warriors) | Quentin Grimes SG 6'5'' 210 C+ B+ C+ B D+ B
+1 In, +1 Out
Solid progressions from Grimes. Was good enough to get backup minutes but did not do a ton with them (.446/.739/.375). Needs more time to season but solid first step

24. Denver Nuggets | Darius Bazley SF 6'9'' 223 21 C+ C+ C+ B+ C B
24. Denver Nuggets | Darius Bazley SF 22 6'9'' 223 C+ C+ C+ B+ C C

Another Nuggets pick, another slow progression.

Poor performance out of the Texas Christian product. 6.5 Rebounds in 21 minutes is not going to cut is long term in this league.

26. Charlotte Hornets | Cheikh Mbacke Diong PF 6'11'' 225 C C- C C+ C A
26. Charlotte Hornets | Cheikh Mbacke Diong PF 6'11'' 225 C C- C B C A

I took him as a flyer with the A potential. I feel bad when someone I draft has a really good TC b/c it looks like I did something behind the scenes especially on a 2nd round pick
