Could Tebow's sudden success (I'm not sold yet) mean Chip...
Is the read option going to be looked at more closely by the NFL? Even as a part-time scheme perhaps - like the wild-cat? Is the spread finally going to makes its way into the league and drag Chip along? I'm not buying it yet, but it is a consideration...

No, like the wildcat the NFL DC will figure it out this off season and shut it down next year.

And outside of maybe 1 game they're not really having a lot of success. I think at best... you could see some teams add that to their redzone packages or some other type of situational use.... but I don't think you can build an offensive scheme off it like Chip has done.

Let's also not forget that the Steelers ran a read option pass on their 2-point conversion at the end of the game against the Packers in the Super Bowl - it's certainly on the rise. However, I think we'd need to see significantly larger/sturdier (and perhaps less paid) QB's for it to take off - which we might see with QB's like Newton and Tebow, but I don't think it's something you can just "shut down" or scheme against like the Wildcat.
If it was, it wouldn't be as successful at the college level as it is, there would be a scheme to beat it. The Wildcat surged and subsequently died off because it was a fad offense - players and coaches just weren't used to it, so it would catch them off guard with all of the ball movement and sweeping players, but based on the setup of the formation, it's really not that hard to scheme for, thus it got beat. The read option doesn't exactly have a scheme that beats it - when highly successful teams that run the read option get beat (like Oregon) it's more due to personnel than scheme. In theory the traditional option can be successful in the NFL, it's just not effective from a risk-reward perspective because in that scheme the quarterback will almost always get blown up by a linebacker because he has to hold onto the ball to the last second for it to be successful. The read option minimizes that to an extent by making the read off of a DE who isn't to the QB yet.

The other thing to consider is how many coaches with absolutely no ties to the NFL, walk in and have been successful ever? Jimmy Johnson (Harbaugh played for 13 years, players respect that) would be about it, and he didn't bring some offense that might take 4 draft years to get his type of players to make it go. Most college coaches fail in the NFL, and especially those with 0 NFL experience.

The spread option, as Chip runs it, has yet to be tried in earnest in the NFL.
Throwing in an occasional read-option or wild-cat package is not the same thing and doesn't make use of the most significant advantages of that offense.
Whether or not a team will do everything needed to commit to it remains to be seen. It's a big risk as they would need to invest in the right players, coaches and lots of time/money into trying it. Going back if it didn't pan out wouldn't be easy.
On the other hand, a successful read-option NFL team would be a jersey-selling machine.

I never bought the NFL talking heads saying the spread or hurry up wouldn't work, saying "NFL defenses are too good." Well NFL offensive players are good too. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is the 53 man roster. Being able to have enough quality guys to sub in would be harder with 10-30 less players.

What I find amusing is, some on our very own board claiming read option is easily figured out and would be like the wildcat and would only be effective for a short time in the NFL... Boy that sounds like Beaver/Husky talk about our system being a sham that won't last in college either... Really? I'm not sure a kid like Cam Newton couldn't make it work, but like Wheaton said, it would be a big gamble to try. At some point if College programs keep winning with it, I suspect someone will give it a real go at the next level and this Teebow experiment might actually tip the scales for someone to make the leap.
PS, the Beaver boards are now full of fans demanding for Riley to institute some type of spread attack as his old school pro style is not working. Too funny. Talk about imitation being the truest form of flattery...

I would say not a chance in H-E double...
There is NO WAY John Elway would go for that. It must be killing him to play Tebow now. Probably tried to play him to show the fans he isn't good and can't win. I think these wins
threw a wrench in that plan for Elway. Considering his history as a top QB I don't think it is possible that he would want to try to leave a pro-style offense. I think if Tebow does well this year
and they don't get a new QB in the offseason they try and mold (force) him into a more traditional NFL offense. But who knows!

I don't think Teebow is the guy to do it, but I think Cam actually could. Cam actually has an arm and is a stud. If they built the right team around him, I think he really could (and who better than Chip as the coach to give it a whirl?). What I was trying to say is that Teebow is at least showing it is a possibility at the next level. Ultimately he will fail in my estimation, he simply has not enough arm to pull it off. But even with no arm, he is winning. What do you think Cam might be able to do with an arm/coach/system/team? Interesting to at least consider.

Rob Chudzinski is currently running quite a bit of read option and a ton of spread packages for Cam, for those of you that don't know. That guy is a genius in the Chip-mold in terms of play-calling and tailoring his offense to the personnel, and will be a HC soon enough.UofDuck wrote:I don't think Teebow is the guy to do it, but I think Cam actually could.
