In The Trenches - Oregon vs FSU

Post by SuperDuck »

I know that a lot of people will be looking at these matchups closely. Will FSU be able to get to Mariota consistently? Will they be able to slow down the Oregon running game? Will Oregon be able to get pressure on Jameis Winston or slow down Dalvin Cook?

I was just trying to find some kind of logical reason that would clearly say that we're outmatched in the trenches, but I don't see it. They DO have a size advantage, but we have good depth on both sides of the ball that should help us to get fresh bodies in and out throughout the game.

Oregon's lineman on both sides of the ball range from 290 to 313. Balducci is 310, Maloata 313.

FSU will definitely be the biggest OL and DL we've seen this season, but I'm not sure how much, if any, of an advantage that will be. They have several 300+ pound guys that are all very talented. Still, the Ducks have played several talented teams that almost all had the size advantage. I went through the list of teams we played with winning records below.

Washington had some huge bodies on both sides of the ball, including 1st team All-American, Danny Shelton at 339!

UCLA is loaded with big, talented bodies on both sides of the ball. Eddie Vanderdoes, Alex Redmond, etc.

Michigan State (obviously) also has big, talented bodies on both sides of the ball.

Same with Stanford, though they're younger this year than in years past.

Utah has some BIG boys, especially on the OL. Their running back, Devontae Booker, is a beast!

Arizona had some huge bodies on the OL, but were pretty small on the DL.

Thoughts?

If you listen to the scout forums, its over. They are bigger therefore they will win. Size alone is enough

Danny Shelton is by all accounts the top NG (oh and according to my UW family, he's north of 350) in the country, and we handled him pretty well. Grasu put him on his ass more times than he made any real impact. FSU also doesn't have a guy like Shaq or kikaha. In fact for all their bosting about how great the front 7 is for FSU, I think we've played 4 teams just as good as them in the front 7. UW, UU, UCLA and MSU. In all those games we scored over 40pts and could have scored more, but we called of the dogs.

I know the all american list are somewhat a popularity contest, but going by that the PAC 12 had as much talent top to bottom as anyone in the country, while outside of FSU no one in the ACC really had any AA type talent. I was also really worried about green, but after doing some reserch I feel we can handle him. He's not the big physical type that gives us fits, he's 6'1 180, our corners have the athleticism and most importantly coaching to slow him down. The kid from WSU burned us, specifically gave Ifo fits, was 6'2 215. That's the type of guy we have problems with. Neal, even without Ifo will have our DBs ready and I won't be surprised if we get 2-3 Int.

The one game I watched much of that they played was vs Notre Dame and I saw a few FSU players flat out gassed on Notre Dame's final drive. Big isn't always better. If they're big, quick, fast and well conditioned, then I'll be concerned, but I'm not sure they'll have seen what we'll bring to the table. That's no disrespect intended, just a fact.

The second half will be interesting.
