UO Trustee not fan of UO cheerleaders

Post by greenyellow »

Seems like a member of the UO Board of Trustees (the Board Vice Chair actually) brought up an issue at a meeting about the cheerleaders being too "overtly sexual" in their dancing and that it's influencing the supposed "rape culture" on campus. Also, that she thought it was unseemly that the cheerleaders were used to wish Phil Knight a happy birthday. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to put her on the board needs to get rid of her fast.

Best comment I read about this was this whole discussion feels like the plot from Footloose. Some higher-up feels dancing is corrupting the young people into doing stuff they're not supposed to and want dancing curbed to stop the said unwanted behavior. Had a good laugh at how similar they are after reading that comment.

These young women are on scholarship, and help design many of their own routines, correct?

I remember when these vulgar moves were the topic of national conversation and Sunday sermons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGZm7EOamWk yet we somehow survived.

There are serious problems in the world, cheerleaders dancing isn't one of them. She needs to get a clue.

So is this female board member saying that these women are provoking rape because of what they're wearing and what they're doing?

Isn't that a rather taboo assertion to make when discussing rape?

EDIT: This board member is so far off base it's not even funny. It's not like a normal guy sees a sexy woman and thinks, "You know, I oughta give that rape thing a try."

Same thoughts I had. She's basically going against what most anti-rape people say shouldn't be done when discussing rape and its victims. I think these people complaining have no idea what they're talking about and are just looking for a problem to complain about when there really isn't one.

Rape is abhorrent and clearly no one on the board condones it, but I have to say if this is what this woman is worried about then perhaps she ought to move on. How about exploring options for educating EVERYONE at the university about rape, not just athletes. How about proposing some type of education programs that all students must attend. I mean there are a ton of other things with regard to this subject that she could focus on as opposed to this. On a list of 1000 topics regarding rape this one would be about 5,947.

I won't even comment on the whole ra*e comment because it's preposterous.

As for the sexuality of their routines; that is kinda the whole premise of cheerleaders. I don't think we could argue against that being true.
