Who would comprise the Mount Rushmore of Oregon?
Which 4 people would comprise Oregon football's Mount Rushmore?
For me, it's Phil Knight, Mike Bellotti, Chip Kelly, and Marcus Mariota.

Sounds good to me, Chip's there until we win a Natty then that coach would take his place I'd think.KingofDucks wrote:Which 4 people would comprise Oregon football's Mount Rushmore?

Helfrich isn't the coach he is today without Chip's tutelage. And Chip set the current culture of the football program. I'm not sure I'd put Helf above Chip even if he won a title. I'd probably replace Marcus with Helf if we won multiple titles and he had a long, successful career.FlDuckFan wrote:Sounds good to me, Chip's there until we win a Natty then that coach would take his place I'd think.KingofDucks wrote:Which 4 people would comprise Oregon football's Mount Rushmore?

And, it is obvious why you selected Phil because he really has been beyond critical to our success, but he's never worn an Oregon football uniform or coaches cap so putting him Oregon's football Mt. Rushmore seems wrong. As much as I love the guy, I don't think a donor belongs with those in the trenches. But maybe he does. I'll have to think about that.UofDuck wrote:Football only? I also don't know if I could put Phil up there, Oregon would not be Oregon without Phil. Mariota certainly, Chip I don't know about, he wasn't here that long, but did turn the Ducks into a powerhouse from just another good team. Bellotti maybe, but it was Brooks that got things going. If it's all sports you have to put Prefontaine up there, he and Bowerman made Track Town, U.S.A.

Len Casanova should be in the conversation for football. Also Bill Bowerman and Bill Hayward if one includes all sports.

I suppose that's fine, depending on how you're determining who should be up there on that mountain, right? For me, it's the 4 people I think have had the biggest impact on getting the program to the level it is at today.UofDuck wrote:And, it is obvious why you selected Phil because he really has been beyond critical to our success, but he's never worn an Oregon football uniform or coaches cap so putting him Oregon's football Mt. Uncle Phil and Marcus are definitely up there. I might replace LMJ for Chip or Mustache Mike.

Re: Who would comprise the Mount Rushmore of Oregon?
I'm always inclined to default to Joey Harrington when talking about Oregon greats. Maybe that's because he was just taking over at QB when I started getting into Oregon Football.
The Joey era is when we knew what it felt like to win a BCS bowl game. When we knew that we had the coolest uniforms in the country. It felt like we were invincible. Again maybe I'm slightly more biased, but I think he deserves a spot up there.

Phil Knight, Kenny Wheaton, Chip Kelly, Marcus Mariota.
Phil represents the guy who gave us the infrastructure.
Wheaton represents the moment when we stopped being someone else's easy win.
Chip Kelly represents our swagger.
And Marcus represents the peak of our abilities and character.

Uncle Phil, Marcus, Chip and some kind of tribute to the fans. The fans have been
a huge part of building this program. Something special about game day at Oregon.
Attending games isnt cheap but they keep filling Autzen.

I think Wheaton is a good tribute to the fans, too. He's the one player who everyone knows, regardless of age/generation.
EDIT: Well, Mariota may be there now... but Wheaton achieved immortality for what he did to Washington and, in turn, our program. Mariota was just really, really, really good.
