It took them a little while but they're gaining decent success after making the jump up. UConn and Boise St are two other examples. UConn was a perennial 1-AA power and then made a Fiesta Bowl before falling off a cliff as of late.
On the field, I'm pretty confident NDSU would be successful from the start in any G-5 conference. In many ways, they are like Boise State was in the mid-90s, though much more successful at the FCS level and with a more proven track record against FBS competition.

I'm not sure how they compare on the academic and funding side of things with other schools, though I think there are published lists with that sort of information if you're really curious. One of the biggest differences are the geographic footprint and media market that NDSU would offer a conference. NDSU is on a virtual island geographically if you look where they are in relation to other conferences. Though, there is some argument to be made that NDSU is gaining traction nationally as more people become familiar with their success. At some point it is conceivable that kind of media exposure and following might move the needle at least a little bit. I think that played a role when Boise State moved up.

Right now we compete every year for the NCAA Division I National Championship, and that is valuable in recruiting. If we moved up to FBS, we wouldn't be in a P-5 conference, so we'd have to settle for conference championships, as it's extremely unlikely that we'd have the conference schedule strength to be on the radar of the FBS playoff committee. We win some recruiting battles against P-5 teams in our current situation, and I suspect this has something to do with competing for a national championship. We may gain some other advantages with the FBS label and being able to play in front of bigger television audiences, but it's hard to say what the net effect would be. Regardless of the level they play, NDSU football will always strive for national championships. That's how they are structured. So if it isn't possible at the FBS level in the current format, it's not as attractive to the institution.

We are bringing in a former Fr AA, and a recruit considered top safety recruit nationally. Our secondary will be much better next year. Sewell hasn't committed yet, but I suspect he will, and he will take Dye's spot. While he will be a Fr, he will have Funa, Slade and KT next to him. UO D could be the tops in the conference next year. I don't see NDSU scoring much vs them.

On O we do lose Herbert and 4 OL. But we also return a top 5 pick at LT, and the last two weeks Aumuvave has been playing over Warmack. Our O will be just fine.
This assumes we don't lose anyone early to the draft. I think we will lose a lot more talent than you spelled out there.

There is maybe 2 on D we could lose, Scott and Lenoir. Wright is quickly becoming as good as Graham and Lenoir. Scott would be a blow, but Austin and Popo aren't much of a step down. In fact Scott cost us vs WSU, and if you paid attention he didn't play much vs SC. He's great vs running teams, but not vs passing teams

Our chances of an upset will be improved if we do not lose one of our star linebackers to the NFL. I am pretty sure that he will stay with the team. But there is an outside chance.

After a 2 successful games both teams are looking better. For NDSU fans the spread stays at the pesky 6. At least that is one possession and can be covered by a pick-six, kick return or fumble recoveries/Ints etc.

Through 11/2/19 The GAM says were the teams to meet today expect:
NDSU @ Oregon
Oregon Ducks 28 NDSU Bison 22
The Bison are assigned an 85% drag coefficient to account for strength of schedule, possible talent difference at least when considered position by position, home field etc.

Based on raw statistical data without the objective drag coefficient it is:

NDSU Bison 28 Oregon Ducks 25

2019 Statistical Comparison all games:

Total offense on the year:
  • NDSU 4,144
    Oregon 4,133
Points For
  • NDSU 353
    Oregon 344
Points Against
  • NDSU 105
Oregon 142 This is probably where the quality of Oregon's opponents shows up the most

Yards Allowed on the year:
  • NDSU 2,443
    Oregon 2,281
ALERT FBS RANT:

The Bison, at least in my opinion, will never get an invite into and FBS conference unless there is an existential threat, real and present, to one of the existing conferences. Going independent would be possible. I think there are four now that might join some kind of home/scheduling alliance. Include South Dakota State there are 6.

NDSU/SDSU did this when they moved independent FCS with something called the Great West Football Conference. It then served as a move up stop over for D2s. Everything settled down and I think its gone now.

After that its all scheduling. Who will give them games to fill out a schedule. To make it worthwhile there has to be schools each and every year like Oregon, Washington, Iowa, Iowa State, OK, OK State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois before the MAC and MWC kick in to fill it out.

This thread is here because this is the biggest game in the NDSU future. Nothing is as big as this one, not even the FCS National Championship and that is a huge game, a huge playoff event and should never be considered second rate to any game.

Bigger and more meaningful than any bowl game played in January it is the Division 1, Small Stadium, National Championship.
  • FCS and FBS are primarily divided by stadium size.
How efficient each school is at football is not really dependent on scale.
NDSU needs 3 - 5 million to get the budget to FBS scale.
NDSU needs an indoor practice facility
general expansion of all facilities for the addtional scholarships

There is no reason why they can't be as competitive at that scale as they are now. They are even more successful at the FCS scale as they were in D2.

Dont confuse the single game with the long-haul. Orgeon certainly has every advantage when comparing the programs over the long-haul. Certainly Oregon will have a better season with their schedule than NDSU would have with it. That's what the huge resource advantage gives Oregon.

For the single game they are playing at the same level each with advantages and disadvantages but the matchup is fair, equitable and it truly is let the best team win.

It's hard for the Bison to get a game. All Bison fans have one eye on this one all the time. Right now it's looking like Oregon -6.

The defensive power ratio is 138.6 for NDSU and 98 for Oregon. 100 is neutral and higher is better.

So you're saying NDSU has a better defense than Oregon? I blew Blue Moon out my nose after reading that. I sure hope you are around when the Ducks remind you why your team is not in a big boy football conference...Ducks win this one by 35.
No. The defensive power ratio tells you how long the field is for your defense. As of Nov 2 it's:
  • NDSU Defense 153 yd field
    Oregon Defense 139 yd field
The offensive power ratio as of Nov 2:
  • NDSU offense 82 yd field
    Oregon offense 84 yd field
This is the kind of edge NDSU shows in almost all statistical comparisons. If The Bison were FBS there would be no adjustment. They would have that edge reflected in the predicted score, over/under and spread.

Its easy to point to Oregon advantages including scholarships, overall talent level, resources maybe even coaching. That's why the 85% cap is put on all NDSU statistics.

sounds like Oregon is wimping out. Sure hope they fight like a man and keep this game scheduled!

NDSU is a FBS program stuck in FCS wasteland. Its a shame that Mountain West or MAC won't extend an invitation but I guess I don't blame them as NDSU would be the top program in its inaugural season.

According to multiple posters on your own sourced link, you started the rumor. Here’s another rumor, Epstein didn’t kill himself.

For better or worse, this is at least more entertaining than a typical FCS game.

It's not surprising when Husky or Beaver fans come on this board to talk trash, but I never thought I'd see fans of an FCS team talk trash on here.

NDSU isn't the typical FCS team. currently #27 in the Sagarin Rankings.

plus we've talked smack with the last 6 FBS team's fanbase and did pretty dam good. (6-0 including #13 Iowa)

Clearly the better questions is when are yall going to buy us out so you can schedule a tune-up game against Bama?

Fans of all schools get irrational.

I’m not sure what’s more annoying, an arrogant fan base being dismissive, or an obnoxious “little brother” fan base demanding respect.

Any Oregon fan of any amount of time has been part of a fan base that has been on both sides of that fence.

My take, we should not take NDSU lightly or we’ll be another notch in their gun belts. Conversely, NDSU needs to recognize that although we should respect them, we won’t be afraid of them. If Oregon comes out focused and ready, we will dispatch of the Bison. That attitude will be a thread though our interactions. Don’t take it personally.

this may not come across in the best possible way in print, but why are we even spending time on this when there are three games left in this season?????

I get that its message board fodder and fun, but just seems like there are better things to discuss.

No personal attack intended and hopefully does not come across that way because that is not the intent at all.

You mean like how Jeffrey Epstein didn't kill himself?

I see this is as a fun opportunity to have some playful shade with our Bison friends of whom we can both have mad respect for the quality of their program while being dismissive of them at the same time, especially the proprietary algorithm which has this game being so close.
It's a game that both teams can "win" in the sense that we can still blow them out and they can still come off as a great program. It's also a game where we don't have to poop our pants as bad as we did against Indiana to lose either.
