Defense

Post by Quietduck »

Can we call this defense great now or do we have to wait till they steamroll the whole Pac 12?

Best we’ve ever had and I’m including the Gang Green years.

It's very good. We still have to face some very talented offenses(Arizona/USC/UW/WSU) and I think those will show if it's the best all time at Oregon.

They gave some stats during the game:

Scoring Defense (not counting Colorado game, so is now even better!):
2016 42.6 126th
2017 29.7 77th
2018 26.3 53rd
2019 9.8 6th

The defense has now allowed only 1 touchdowns in the last 63 opponents' possessions.

We have the best percentage of touchdowns allowed per red zone possessions in all of FBS.

It used to be that the offense was fun to watch while the defense was painful. Now the defense may even be more fun to watch than the offense!

This defense if built just like every very good Ducks defense for the last three decades, with the exception of the Igor/Haloti years--- From the back forward.

The DBoyz are really killing it. The DL doesn't wreak a ton of havoc, but the defensive backfield just really locks sh*t down while everyone else does great at doing their jobs.

Going in to this game, Colorado had an offense that was supposed to be a test. But, save for an occasional run that got away, and a few PI's, the Buffs were neutered. UW doesn't use their TE a lot, and their WR's are good, but not like they have been the last couple of years, and RB's are definitely down from last season. Eason has a big arem like Montez, but is not as mobile.

Very good Grasshopper. This same defensive scheme at Boise State, with a huge talent advantage over most of their schedule was a very good 20 points per game. At Oregon it's been fantastic to this point because you have two corners and a nickel who can neutralize all three WR and allows Safeties to play centerfield and Linebackers and Safeties to pursue and come up in run support.

The best defenses in the PAC this year and UW the last few years all highly correlate to how well you can cover the opposing WRs with the minimum amount of help.
