According to the local paper in Norman, Oklahoma, Oregon will be hiring long-time Oklahoma assistant coach Melyssa Lombardi to be their new head coach. She was named 2017 NFCA Assistant Coach of the Year and her specialty is pitchers and catchers.

Interesting, Coach Lombardi's specialty is with pitchers & catchers, White was very involved with the Kleist,Elish & Balint. Hopefully, Lombardi's philosophy will mesh with what they have become comfortable with, and they'll all stay, along with Iakopo at catcher.

Sounds like a good hire and old bean counter can probably get by with MW's old salary or less.

It'll be interesting to see who Lombardi brings on for assistants. One of Oklahoma's volunteer assistants is former Duck Janie Takeda, who now goes by Janie Reed after marrying former UO baseball player Jake Reed.

Be great to have her come back; a bridge between the past and the future, along with being a great player: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janie_Takeda
Takeda holds 4 career records at Oregon, most career hits 309, most career runs 204, most career doubles 42 and most career stolen bases 102. She also holds the single season record for triples 8. She was also added to the 300 hits-200 runs - 100 stolen bases club.

I have became a big Ducks softball fan since I joined this board, I would love to see Lombardi bring the Ex Duck asst with her! Plus see who else is her staff! And she has a great coaching name!

Lombardi will be making more than White did this past season so the statements he made about Oregon being unwilling to invest heavily into him and the program seem like complete bunk. Seems he won't just say that the Texas job was all about the money.

On principle I hate long term contracts for assistants who have zero experience as head coaches. Not to say she is not a good hire, she has an excellent record as a pitching coach. But if you are going the assistant route as opposed to hiring someone with a proven track record as a head coach there is a lot more bust potential, so don't get stuck.

If you are hiring for a program in rebuild mode I would more likely buy the need for a longer contract. With a loaded program like this though, it wont take 5 years to see if she is an elite head coach or not which is what she is being paid to be from day one. Hire a career assistant from a successful program and you can get a Chip Kelly though most of the time it is a Helfrich or Lambright.

Anyway I hope she has great success as it is one of my favorite Duck sports to watch.

Well, as far as Press Conferences go, I thought it went great. Coach Lombardi sounds like she is sincerely happy to be the Head Coach of Oregon Softball. She seemed relaxed and at ease during the question/answer session. No preplanned slogans, simply spoke of how impressed she was with the facilities and after Oklahoma played at the Jane last season how excited she is that it will be her home field now. Looks like the Ducks got a good one.
