After Perrilloux was kicked off it really screwed us for a while. Lee was made the starter a good two years earlier than expected and that 2008 season killed his confidence. He played very well this year and last year when he came in but it took a lot to shake that 2008 season out of his system.

Since then we have been plague with quarter back issues. I am beyond excited about Kiel coming here. Coach Les has really solidified that position. Zach Mettenberger will be the man for the next two years then Rivers (pocket passer), Randall (option QB with a good arm) and Kiel will compete for the job.

Things are looking bright….can’t wait to see what Kragthorpe can do with these kids.

I forgot Jared Randall went to LSU. Did he not come to Oregon because of grades? My memory is shot....

He didn't qualify initially and our coaches just stopped contacting him. He re-took tests and all and when he finally qualified we hadn't talked to him in months and he tried to contact the coaches but they ignored his calls. Some wonder if he actually ever was a full qualifier or if LSU just made an exception for him as the SEC often does

ETA: I can’t remember exactly but I want to say it had something to do with him scoring better on the ACT (which is the only test we use) then he did and the SATs…but don’t quete me on that.

In any event…I don’t think any school can make an exception when it comes to qualifying…is that not a NCAA violation? Maybe I'm confused...it happens a lot.

A write up on Kiel and what it means for LSU...
What Kiel means for LSU
http://247sports.com/Article/What-Kiel- ... -LSU-54535

For all the mutant talent that trots onto the field in Baton Rouge, the wide receiver position has been fairly quiet over the past few years. This year Rueben Randle is third in the SEC in receiving after being the top wide receiver prospect in the country out of the 2009 recruiting class. Odell Beckam is the only other Tiger in the top 40 in the SEC in receiving yardage.

With the addition of Gunner Kiel, Les Miles could be getting a rare instant starter at QB.

2010 was even worse in terms of big-play receivers with Randle checking in all the way down at No. 22 in the conference and Terrence Toliver at No. 17. 2009 was more of the same. Two receivers – Brandon LaFell and Toliver – ranked in the top 40 in the SEC.
So why can’t LSU - the most talented team in the country by many estimates - find anybody to go get the football?

Well, they’ve had nobody to get it to them.

Since the departure of Matt Flynn, the quarterback position in Baton Rouge has been at best shaky and at worst inept. The quarterback carousel included a significant stint from Harvard transfer Andrew Hatch. As a former Ivy League safety, I can confirm that there are no SEC-level receivers running around in Hanover, N.H. or New Haven, CT to prepare Hatch for Demetrius Byrd or Tolliver.

Over the past two seasons, it has seemed like the play of Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson has been the only factor keeping LSU out of the national championship. 2011 has obviously been the exception with both quarterbacks playing well enough to allow the talent around them to win the games.

That may all soon change with the arrival of five-star Gunner Kiel who committed to Les Miles’ program on Tuesday.

Kiel is polished, with a good pedigree, size, major arm-strength, accuracy and mentality. He is what LSU has been waiting for. In the 2012 class, there’s probably not more of a sure thing at the quarterback position.

With the departure of Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson after this season, Kiel will have the opportunity to win the starting quarterback job as a freshman by enrolling early and battling junior college transfer Zach Mettenberger this spring and summer.

Gunner Kiel is the nation’s top pro-style passer.

Kiel will be a kid in a candy store.

Reportedly, the talent level in Baton Rouge is a big part of what lured Kiel to the Bayou and for good reason.

The talent at his disposal is scary. Rueben Randle will have the option of returning for his senior season where he would be projected as one of the top receivers in the nation. Russell Shepard and Jarvis Landry, a junior and freshman respectively, are former five-stars poised to fulfill their lofty expectations. Meanwhile freshman Odell Beckam is emerging as one of the top young playmakers in the SEC.

And then there’s the running game with a seemingly bottomless stable powerful explosive backs, all of whom should return to the roster next season.

Kiel showed that he is not afraid of a challenge by initially committing to his home-state program of Indiana. With his final commitment to LSU, he’s proving that he’s not afraid of pressure either because Kiel may be the only missing piece to another national championship game appearance for LSU in 2012.

Looks like he's enrolled at Notre Dame now. Big loss for LSU but they are on the trail for some other QBs so shouldn't be hurt too bad by this.

Didn't see that thread yet but had sort of remembered a Kiel thread already so thought that it would be an appropriate spot.
