Re: Dick Harter passed away
That's so sad. I know that we all get older and pass away, though. It was so wonderful watching his teams play (on TV, I never got to see them in person). "The Kamikaze Kids" will always have a special place in the history of Oregon basketball.Duck24 wrote:Just saw on OregonLive that he passed away tonight.
Ernie Kent, Ronnie Lee, Greg Ballard and so many more come to mind when I think of those Harter teams.
I remember when the Ducks broke UCLA's 81(?) game winning streak in Pauley Pavilion.
Their semi-final loss in the NIT to Princeton (Princeton or Providence, I get those two confused).
Much more.
Rest in Peace, Coach Harter and thank you so much for all of the wonderful memories.

I Was @ Oregon 74-78. The teams were never 'really' good but so exciting to watch.
College head coaching record
Season Team Overall Conference Postseason
1971–72 Oregon 6–20 0–14
1972–73 Oregon 16–10 8–6
1973–74 Oregon 15–11 9–5
1974–75 Oregon 21–9 6–8 NIT
1975–76 Oregon 19–11 10–4 NIT
1976–77 Oregon 19–10 9–5 NIT
1977–78 Oregon 16–11 6–8
Total Oregon: 112–82 48–50
A great moment to have seen is described here:
"In 1974, when the rival Oregon State Beavers clinched the Chancellor’s Trophy, which was annually given to the team that won the Civil War series, the head cheerleader brought out the trophy and was running around the floor when Dick Harter tripped him."
RIP Mr Harter

Yep, while I'm sure, growing up in the area (born 1962), I had heard the name Stan Love (and let's not go there . . . ), it was the Harter teams that really got me into Oregon basketball. I was probably about the perfect age, too. Most impressive moment to me of that era, hands down: Their 65-45 mauling of UCLA in Pauley in 1976, ending the Bruins' 98-game home winning streak.
A number of Harter teams would have made the Big Dance under the 64 (or more) team format. Would have been interesting to see what those teams could have done.

Sad news. He definitely turned around a program that was once a bottom feeder. An excellent coach and mentor.
“If everybody in this room just want to be real with themselves, this game could have went either way,” he said. “We turned the ball over a lot. We beat ourself. Just be real with yourself right now. We beat ourself.”

Way before my time but I definitely appreciate all he did & the teams he had. I wouldn't be enjoying the level of basketball I am now without him. RIP Dick Harter.

Sad to hear. He coached some really great teams for the Ducks.
