93 Shooting Guards

Post by Zyme »

SG:
Allan Houston C+ A- C+ C- C- B

This kid from the deep south can flat out ball. Raised in Louisville, Tennessee plucked the kid away from Memphis State and Kentucky's back yard. Though they never could seem to get a team to put around him, Houston torched SEC defenses to the tune of nearly 19PPG. His step back, which he seemed to make a point of showing off during the combine, is 1st rate and clear a ton of space for him. In the bench press, he blew the 2 guard record into oblivion as his numbers compared favorably with many of the seven + foot centers. Now the elephant in the room: he really plays one way. He never seems to care on defense and while he moves and recovers off of screens quite well, his footwork and effort let him down. He is tall for a shooting guard and a tank, should make great professional.

Isaiah Rider: B- B C- D+ C- B

For as physically gifted Houston is, Rider seemed hell bent on showing that he deserved to be the top SG chosen. He has a great outside shot to keep defenses honest, and easily the best body control of any guard as well. He seems to always be in control, even when changing form a dunk to a circus layup, or up and under on his pretty reverse layup. The scrimmage between JR and Allan was something to see as they match each other shot for shot and dominated the ball for most of the game. Rider and Allen really are way more alike than they would care to admit, as both share a distaste for the defensive side of the ball. Not so say he's lazy, but he's really lazy on defense. He's a little lean at 215, but he's tall and plenty of room to fill it in.

Antoine Rigaudeau: C+ C+ C B- D+ A

It is close who the best foreign prospect is this year, Frenchmen Rigaudeau or the Argentine Nicola. He has a very mature game coupled to a very solid set of measurables. He is quick as a chat and en extérieur game is at a very high level. He doesn't have nearly the prowess shooing as Allan nor the tricky moves around the hoop like JR. His polished balanced approach to the game has served him will. Despite deciding not to attend the combine, most scouts were happy with what they saw on film. He struggled when he was asked to play the 3 in small lineups as he was often overpowered by larger forwards. It might take him time to adjust to the speed of the NBA but he should eventually find a spot in a NBA rotation

Harold Ellis: C+ C+ C C+ C A

The definition of a Small School Phenom. Ellis is out of Division II Morehouse College, and nobody he faced could hold him back. He was explosive around the rim and tallied an astounding 28/6 his senior year. Against the Div.II competition, it was not a competition, it was a rout. While most scouts expected him to fold when he was given an invitation to the combine, he obliterated his doubters wrong. Though, understandably, his offensive output was down compared to his tape, he competed with the best of the combine's guards and came out as the combine's best defensive option as the SG position. He looked very polished on that side of the ball and even flashed his devilishly quick hands. Scouts graded him out very well for upside.

Dexter Boney: C- B C C D+ B

Another kid who was placed under the post-93 UNLV spotlight. While he acquitted himself well, the team could never live up the lofty heights that the miracle squad achieved. Super polished jumpshot and terrific range on his shot, Boney was one of the best shooters at this year's combine. While he was only decent on the defensive side of the ball, he showed great discipline both with the ball and while defending. While he could use some work on his defensive and offensive footwork, scouts really didn't see too much to worried about with Dexter.
