Stinks to see him leave but I'm sure this isn't a surprise to anyone.

I don't mind, sounds like he didn't do much with the opportunity he was given. Don't mean to judge the guy too harshly but I don't mind someone else getting his scholarship either.

This is the equivalent of Austin Kuemper transferring from the basketball program.

Something inside was keeping him stuck. Hope he changes his attitude and improves his work ethic. Have to wish him well no matter what. Want the kids to succeed. Hopefully he will get out of his own way.

Re: Mahalak transferring
Scuttlebutt is, the problem was that Mahalak was largely unable to make the transition to Oregon's system from his Pro-Style roots... He is essentially a drop-back passer.

Great for both sides. If he couldn't any playing time when it was just Lockie and Alie, then he must have some problems. Gives us an extra roster spot, and gives him a chance to get playing time somewhere else. Good luck Mahalak.

Re: Mahalak transferring
Woundedknees-- you may want to take a second look at his high school tape. He played in a read-option system.
I'm bummed about this as it puts essentially all the hope on the shoulders of Travis Jonsen. TJ came in as a project QB, and after missing a season with turf toe, he still has a long way to go. Terry Wilson and Justin Herbert will be redshirt freshman. Alie will still be Alie. If Mahalak could right his personal ship, he really could have been the guy.
The void he leaves is one that seems like we could again see a starter in 2017 that wasn't already on the roster. Not that I'm opposed to that, but it's definitely not as ideal as having a guy in the system for a few years. Case Cookus at Northern Arizona comes to mind, as does Cameron Burston at Contra Costa College.

Re: Mahalak transferring
It is good for both sides, he is a good kid and will probably do well elsewhere but if he couldn't pass Lockie or Alie on the depth chart there is something to be said. He was not going to see the field this upcoming season and with so many other guys coming in he would have likely been bet out moving forward. This gives him a better chance somewhere else and opens up a scholarship for the Ducks. It does suck that he was never able to break through, he has so much potential. Good luck to him.
