Re: Oregon vs UNLV Tournament (Feb 16 Fri-Sun)
a real lack of reporting on the team this year. some info is really only now coming out, and the season starts tomorrow.
looks like sophomore ryne nelson will take over shortstop. he'll also be one of our top set-up guys, per horton. they're still settling on a catcher, but the infield looks fairly solid.
freshmen johnny deluca and evan williams may get starting nods in the outfield.

yeah not too shabby we finally chased their starter and goldfarb took advantage of a bad pitch by their bullpen.
mercer appears to be in control, too.

Re: Oregon vs UNLV Tournament (Feb 16 Fri-Sun)
knee-jerk reactions:
i'm quite nervous about our starting pitching. mercer was excellent, but stringer was a borderline pac-12 starter last year and didn't flash any signs of improvement on saturday. he found a groove over a couple of innings but when he got hit, he got hit hard. disappointed in acuna -- i thought he had better stuff last year than what he showed on sunday. i thought he might make a mercer-like jump in productivity, but we'll have to wait to see if that's the case. i know it was just the first start for everybody, maybe nerves played a factor, but that really wasn't what we wanted to see.
good news is that the offense showed up, they went yard, and the defense looked stout. there were five errors made in the three games, but 4 of those errors came from the pitching staff.
we have a VERY weak non-con schedule this year, which horton put together undoubtedly because he knew we were looking at a rebuilding year. gotta win a lot of these games because we've done ourselves no favors RPI-wise.
