Pete Carroll tosses his players

Post by maxduck »

under the proverbial bus...

Tight end Anthony McCoy, offensive tackle Tyron Smith and defensive lineman Averell Spicer have been ruled academically ineligible for the Emerald Bowl on Saturday, Coach Pete Carroll announced this morning.

"We're really disappointed these guys didn't come through," Carroll said. "They had all the help in the world to get it done and they didn't do it."

Although his statement is true, he certainly could have worded it a bit better.

While he could have been more tactful, he is telling the truth. The players have all the help in the world (study halls, tutors, and other academic resources) so no player should ever really be in trouble of being ineligible. People can say that being on the team involves a lot of work but there are other students who work 40 hrs a week and still manage to pull decent grades.

How ironic, Pete tosses his player's under a bus. Illegally given to the player's by a booster lol!!

Funny tonight on ESPN the reported that McKight didn't make the trip for the bowl game, and when asked why he didn't make the trip his response was no comment because they (the media) had already ruined his life. Yeah Joe it was the media, it had nothing to do with anything you did wrong. Funny SC players and coaches just don't get that there are rules in place for everyone, SC included.

I agree that what he said is the truth. That being said.... a real "Players Coach" wouldn't be so quick to call them out in the media like that. He sure seems to lose a lot of his cool guy act when they aren't winning.

What's wrong with this? Players who can't deal with their academics deserve to get chastised. It's selfish and it hurts their team.

I doubt they show up for their bowl game any better than OSU and Cal. BYU is a very good team but OSU isn't that bad. Expect BC to win or come close. The PAC-10 is being disgraced in bowl games thus far, not because of losing but because of their attitude. It seemed like they didn't care that much. The enthusiasm wasn't there, unlike BYU and Utah. Stanford and UA will likely give an enthusiastic effort. UCLA should feel lucky to be in any bowl so hopefully gives a better effort. You know the Ducks will give it their all.

I agree with everybody. There's no excuse for players with the help they get if they want to try. Some apparently feel they deserve it without trying.

But Carroll could have handled it better. I think Chip would have.
