USC assistant moving on

Post by maxduck »

The ink is barely dry on LOI's and Trojan linebacker coach Joe Barry is heading to the San Diego Chargers. According to Rivals Barry recruited both 4 star linebackers who signed with SC (Scott Starr and Oregon target Jabari Ruffin) plus 5* OL Zach Banner.

And this is why what CK did was absolutely the right thing to do!

If you're possibly going to leave, do it before signing day. Don't make a selfish decision at the expense of student athletes.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

So a kid shouldn't come to Oregon to play for Chip Kelly? Maybe we should just have the admissions office send promotional literature to prospective student athletes and not have all that travel expense? I understand the point you are making but reality is kids make decisions based on relationships. In this case he was going to be the position coach for two of the kids he recruited.

kids commit to a school because they build a relationship with the coaches that are recruiting them.

It's not absurd. Coaching is a job, and like any job, if another offer comes along that is more intriguing they will take the new job most of the time. Yes, the kids build relationships with the coaches that are recruiting them, but in several cases the kid will hardly ever have contact with that coach outside of recruiting. The coaches do try and sell themselves to the PSA, but for the most part they are selling what the school and the program have to offer. I'm not blaming the PSA, the are young and naive. While their relationship with their coaches is important, they need to be told to choose a school based on what it has to offer, not entirely off of the relationship they have with the recruiter. I worded it poorly by saying they have it coming, and that's my fault, but they need to make a more informed decision
