One rumored reason is being named AD at Stanford. That would be a big blow to Eugene landing future national/international meets. Sprint coach Robert Johnson is reported to be the replacement.

edit--From Doug Binder, a track reporter--
BREAKING AT THE TRIALS: Hearing from reliable source that Robert Weir fired by Oregon yesterday and Vin Lananna stepping down.
Same source tells me that Robert Johnson will (or has?) been elevated to head coach. Lananna not "leaving" but role will change.
Weir dismissal and Lananna job change are not related. Oregon is likely to announce staff shuffle next week.

Re: Rumor--Vin Lananna may resign
It's a done deal now with Robert Johnson taking over as head coach and Vin being more administrator than coach. Hopefully this doesn't hurt the long distance recruiting that they've been known for under Vin, although they have been trying to branch out into other track disciplines in the last couple classes.
