JUCO SF visiting Oregon (commits to Oregon)

Post by greenyellow »

Looks like Oregon has another JC player looking to take the final available scholarship. Has a good bloodline but will be a RS SO, meaning there'll be 7 SO on scholarship. I actually kind of expect someone to eventually transfer out (Richardson, Moore, or Kuemper) though so it may equal out soon.
Elgin Cook, a 6-6 small forward at Northwest Florida, is visiting Oregon and Gonzaga this weekend, Forbes said.

The former Iowa State pledge and son of former NBA player Alvin Robertson is averaging 15 points and six rebounds and shooting 61 percent from the field.

Cook will choose from among Illinois, TCU, VCU, South Carolina, New Mexico and Arkansas for his final three visits.

He will have three years of D-1 eligibility.

“Elgin is an explosive athlete with a very high skill level,” Forbes said. “He is an elite-level defender who is going to keep getting better and better.”

interesting. since the aaron gordon ship has not sailed, i would say you are correct, altman must know something that we don't regarding transfers.

He's either a back-up in case Gordon doesn't pan out or someone else transfers.

Looks like Cook was at the game tonight. He witnessed probably one of the worst performances of the year by Oregon. Hopefully that doesn't sway him away from Oregon. Oregon is more likely to get him at this point than Gordon with how they play without Artis.

For a JUCO, that might be a good sign. Oregon is one of the better teams in the Pac-12, yet they need help and look like crap. Good sign to come in and contribute right away, yet still be on a competing team. Of course, that's the optimistic view. He could have thrown up in his mouth while watching the game, and now wouldn't touch Oregon with a 30 foot pole.

Wishful thinking but not unrealistic. JC guys usually are looking for different things than a kid straight out of HS. Plus Matt Knight arena on its own is awe inspiring. It'd just be nice to add someone who can create some sort of offense on his own.

Cook is the son of former Arkansas and NBA great, Alvin Robertson.

"He's tough, he's a really tough kid," Forbes said. "He has a really high skill level. He can play the wing, he can play the four. Depends on how you want to play. His athleticism is off the charts. He can score around the basket, he can score in transition and can shoot 15-20 foot jumpers. He's not a great three point shooter yet, he's becoming one. I think in time he will be."
Like his father, Cook is outstanding on the defensive end.
"He can guard the point guard to the four man," said Forbes, who graduated from Southern Arkansas University. "Probably much like his father."

If he is half as good as his dad was, we need to get him here! I remember watching those Arkansas teams and recall them playing lockdown D and fast paced on offense.
