Over/Under 8 Wins

Post by StevensTechU »

Maybe I'm crazy, but if Oregon stays healthy I don't see Oregon having less than 9 wins. In the Pac-12, you need to be able to stop the air attack, and I think Oregon's DBs will take a huge step forward from a year ago. Offensively, Oregon has potential 1st-2nd round NFL picks at WR, TE, and RB. The only game on the calendar that I think there's a good argument for making Oregon the underdog at this stage is @USC in November. ASU, washington, and Stanford all have to come to Autzen.

It's been quite something to see the lack of Duck love in the preseason college football prognostications (as well as all the Husky love, though perhaps that focus belongs on the Other Guys page). But as far as potential Duck 2016 losses go, I'd think at Utah should be thrown in there.

Utah always plays Oregon tough, even when the Ducks won two years ago, so you can definitely make that argument. To me, I think about how they're going to break in a new QB and don't have Devontae Booker anymore, and I still think there's a gap in the amount of talent Oregon has versus Utah. Overall, it's hard to know whether the Utes team in 2016 will be the one that beat Michigan and Oregon, or the one that lost to Arizona and UCLA.

Well now I feel like the Ducks season is just around the corner! I looked over their schedule and realized it's too tough of a schedule to be too optimistic in my predictions, mostly because of that WSU game last year. So as I type without optimistic fingers "we" have plenty of tough games on the schedule. First one being in Lincoln, while Nebraska is still under a new coach, it will be a tough crowd in a tough stadium and a big nationally watched game, not a sure win. Next is WSU in Pullman  , for my own sanity and beer consumption limit I hope we go up very big, very early... But we get out of Pullman with a W. The crowd and players will be amped for the huskies at Atzen, W. Next up after a bye week, Cal in Berkeley, not a sure thing at all, assuming Cal starts out big like last year....... But another W. ASU at Atzen, should be a W just because ASU teams waffles more than most other teams I can think of, but not a sure thing at all. USC in L.A.!!! No comment.......only because I have no idea but my gut at this point leaning towards a L. Stanford at Atzen, kind of the same thing, always a slobber knocker game 50/50. Utes in Salt Lake, tough place and tough team with a great coach, we should get out with a W..... I hope. Beavers in Corvallis, W nuff said.

So to tally up my thoughts:

4 sure wins, if there is such a thing.
5 probable wins, 70% chance of a win, 70% because I didn't want to break the games down further so I grouped them.
3 50/50 games could go either way. USC in L.A., Stanford at Atzen and Utes in Salt Lake.

Of the 8 non sure wins "we" should win at least 5...... So by my highly scientific calculations we have a 9 or more wins this season.

Thanks for the post, for the first time I do feel the seasons close! Here's a link to the Ducks schedule if needed.

I've already left the WSU and TCU games in the rearview. Barring an unlikely disaster, the reality of this year's team will not be like the reality of last year's team.

We have two QBs who (based on the spring game eye test) seem much more capable than Lockie/Allie. Both will get stronger with the offense as the year goes on. Sure, neither is Vernon Adams or Marcus Mariota, but both look good enough to be quality starters -- and never underestimate the importance of consistency (not in terms of personal performance, but in not having huge drop-offs when one guy gets hurt).

I love our home lineup. I'm not worried about Nebraska. I'm very excited about our changes in the coaching staff.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I think Oregon wins the Pac-12 title this year. We'll probably lose once along the way, but I really like our chances.

I will say this I like how nobody thinks we will be all that good because it allows to find out what we have without a lot of hype and if our D improves like I think it is capable of we will be really good

Over.

Last year in the summer poll I was the only one that had Oregon losing 5 games and I stated it was because the secondary would make the whole defense look awful. I missed the games by one but hit defense correctly.

This year I don't think Hoke will allow things like letting Robinson go 4 games and hundreds of snaps without finding a ball carrier at safety. It does scare me that they are apparently moving him back there when he was/ could be a decent corner. Other than that I think the secondary, thus the entire defense will be improved. We are really bucking the odds going with a 4-3 base as 3/4 of the teams in the PAC-12 tried and dumped it. But even at that it wont be as bad as last year because its talent first and scheme second. (I also doubt and hope we see very little true 4-3 against the zone read and air raid teams that make up the majority of our opponents.)

I think the 2 running QBs with all the talent at running back will give the offense something that will be consistently tough to stop. Last year points versus yards gained was not that good. A stronger read option attack in the red-zone should help that.

So I'm Over even though I really want to see the real scheme on defense in action, in fact I'm way over. I think they win at least 10.

Discounting Oregon State is in error considering how they played us the last two games.

There is no way we're losing at home to Stanford.

Oregon is too good to not be favored in that game. The Cardinal has to prove it can reload with a quarterback who is as uniquely effective in that offense as Kevin Hogan was.

EDIT: I'm also not at all worried about OSU. They played us close two of the past three years, but both of those games were in "off" years (not "off" by record, but just weird seasons in which the Ducks didn't have much consistency).

Honestly, if there's a single home game I'm at all worried about, it's UW... but we'll beat them, too.

On the road against USC and Utah are our best chances to lose... but being honest, USC hasn't done anything over the past several years and Utah just lost some key pieces of last year's team.

We'll see. It's always emotionally safer to be a bit pessimistic, but I just don't see Oregon losing more than one conference game.

I will say over I think there are 3 possible losses this year and that is it I think on the road against Nebraska is possible but I will still favor the duck on it... I also think road games against USC and Utah could be losses. I will wait and see how the season looks in October before make any kind of determination on those two. USC always scares me.. they still get the talent year in and year out. They not been able to do anything with it yet but the time is coming. I think we win against Stanford at home and the dawgs. I will probably be at the husky game so they better win that one.

On a side note on the Utah game... mentally speaking will Pharoah Brown be able to be an impact player there. I know these are athletes but the idea of playing on the field that almost cost him his career has to be scary.

The turf at Utah's stadium was found to be failing prematurely so it was completely redone.

I see the potential for 10+ wins, though I think we'll be better next year. I see a conference championship as a real possibility. I think we'll be fine at QB. I see the real "make or break" positions as being our O-line and defensive front seven. If those positions can mature quickly I can see a special season as being a real possibility. The defense should improve significantly under Hoke.

Honestly, I'm more concerned about the development of other teams QBs than I am with Oregon's.

Look at how many teams will have new QBs. I'm not sure about Virginia, though I think they'll have a new QB. Cal is replacing Jared Goff, ASU is replacing Mike Bercovicci, USC is replacing Cody Kessler, Stanford is replacing Kevin Hogan, Utah is replacing Travis Wilson and maybe more.

Unfortunately, Tommy Armstrong will be back for his senior year at Nebraska. That should be a tough game. Also, I'm not ready to call Virginia a win just yet either. They'll be a different team under Bronco Mendenhall, talent or not.
