Re: Gas pumping in Oregon
Way back in high school there was a girl in my drivers ed class that didn't know how to pump gas so we got to drive off campus for her to learn. Here in Florida it's normal to see a kid 13 or older pumping gas while the parent runs in to grab them both a drink or something.

And how much more do you suppose you pay for your gas by having someone do it for you
Not to mention the ethanol they add to all your gas which kills gas mileage.

Re: Gas pumping in Oregon
As someone stated above I find that gas is cheaper in Oregon than in Washington. The few times I have travelled and filled in Washington that has been the case the last few years. Go figure! Sitting in your car staying dry, warm, cool and not smelling of gas!nogerO wrote:And how much more do you suppose you pay for your gas by having someone do it for you

Re: Gas pumping in Oregon
One of the biggest reasons for the fluctuation of gas prices around the country is the state and local taxes added on to the price per gallon....... so is why Washington has higher prices than Oregon on average, they add more taxes to gasoline than Oregon. The biggest tax added to gas in Oregon is a road tax. I drive a diesel pickup in Oregon, been pumping my own for years, fact is many people pump their own gasoline in Oregon. I've yet to see anyone stuffed and cuffed for pumping gas...... yes I know it's a fine..... they just don't enforce it. The biggest threat is some kid pumping his/her chest out and informing you it's against the law...... most attendants just say thanks.duckduckgoose wrote:As someone stated above I find that gas is cheaper in Oregon than in Washington. Finally, I have known for years that the other 48/49 (jersey can't make up their mind) are putting their lives in sever danger and risking the lives of everyone in a several block radius! How could the rest of the country be so wrong while we in Oregon know we are right! Keep Oregon weird! Yes tongue in cheek.

Oregon now has a sales tax on new cars, they just called it a 'privilege tax'GrandpaDuck wrote:
Sorry I can't recall or find in a quick look up the number of failed attempts at putting in a sales tax or self service gas. Most attempts at both have been through ballot measures. (Not counting this new rural only self service measure.) The pump your own were almost always well funded initiatives started and funded by the big oil companies that owned stations in Oregon. That in itself was kind of a kiss of death on its own and they were soundly defeated.
The voting down of sales taxes and thumbing of noses at oil companies became kind of a badge of honor for the state. Since these battles last happened years ago, I doubt younger people have the same emotional attachment to these issues.

It will eventually happen in increments, like every tax, and the increments, once established, will be used as an argument for implementing the full sales tax.

That's a business tax, not sales tax. It's on the dealers not the buyers.Phalanx wrote:Oregon now has a sales tax on new cars, they just called it a 'privilege tax'GrandpaDuck wrote:

Re: Gas pumping in Oregon
Since it becomes part of the overhead of doing business as a car dealer, it nevertheless has a direct effect on the cost of purchasing a new automobile, ergo, it is effectively a sales tax.pudgejeff wrote:That's a business tax, not sales tax. Re: Gas pumping in Oregon
It's funny: I regularly pay monthly sales tax on automobile purchases in both California and Washington. The Oregon one works exactly the same way. And it is based on sales. The rest is just semantics.pudgejeff wrote:That's a business tax, not sales tax. Surprise, Surprise!!! Oregon has another tax? You're kidding? They've taxed you poor f^&Cers until you say "No More Taxes!" and then they came up with a quaint little term called "user fees". You know snow pack beach access oxygen use fee road usage fee. Geez!Phalanx wrote:Oregon now has a sales tax on new cars, they just called it a 'privilege tax'GrandpaDuck wrote:

Re: Gas pumping in Oregon
I guess the people in charge must think the people in Oregon are too stupid to be able to pump their own gas without burning everything for a city block to the ground. Good thing those fine people in the state government have decided to control it's citizens for their own good.Alan wrote:One of the biggest reasons for the fluctuation of gas prices around the country is the state and local taxes added on to the price per gallon....... so is why Washington has higher prices than Oregon on average, they add more taxes to gasoline than Oregon.
