...is what Arizona dialed in on offense. Those quick outs, WR screens, gashing running plays are ALL plays that Oregon State loves to run, and probably does better than Arizona at this point.

You know what scared me? The entire last hour. Fumbles, botched snaps, crazy passes that needed to fit into a football-sized window... SCARY game.
But, yeah, the D hasn't looked good in a while... I think it's gonna be a shootout of a Civil War.

Thank goodness we are at home against OSU, eh? hahaOregonian wrote:...is what Arizona dialed in on offense. Those quick outs, WR screens, gashing running plays are ALL plays that Oregon State loves to run, and probably does better than Arizona at this point.
Our D always steps it up at home, I think we'll be alright.

I seldom watch Oregon State (life is short), so maybe you can answer this. Stanford and Arizona had bigger O-lines, and pretty much dominated the start of the game -- hence, cheat the run and give up the short pass plays. Does Oregon State have a bunch of hogs, or are they more akin to Cal or UCLA?Oregonian wrote:...is what Arizona dialed in on offense. Re: The only thing that scares me about what we saw in Tuscon...
The thing that scared me was Arizona's defensive game plan and how effective it was for most of the game. They did a good job containing our zone running play by keying onto LaMichael James and making Masoli beat them. They held us to the fewest amount of rushing yards (175) since the Boise state game. I think LaMichael James only had 8 carries that first half and I'm sure most of those were on the 2 scoring drives.
They held us to 14 points going into the fourth quarter......
I've never seen a football game were a team caught so many BIG breaks before.
We were good, but we definitely got lucky that game.

I don't think they are quite as big upfront as Stanford or Arizona, but Quizz will still force us to respect the run and in turn make us vulnerable to the same type of offense. I think Stanford exposed our defense and other teams now can easily exploit us if they are accurate enough to keep us honest. It looks like OSU is good enough to exploit us this year. The real question is will they be able to stop our offense or not. I hope not.monster wrote:I seldom watch Oregon State (life is short), so maybe you can answer this. They are a different team at home and especially with time to prepare! The offense will look sharp, and the d will be far from the lackadaisical one we saw against ASU because they will know that have to play hard and of course the fans will be back in it for this one....they fans were pathetic against ASU!

Yeah our D line has been pushed around the last few games, but remember the OS D Coordinator has never figured out how to stop our O, and I don't expect them to this game.

Re: The only thing that scares me about what we saw in Tuscon...
Nobody really has been able to stop our O from scoring the whole game since Boise State. Arizona did for 2 quarters being the 2nd and 3rd quarters. The fourth quarter our Offense got it going again and ended up beating them. Yes we got lucky and had several breaks go our way. Sometimes the mark of a good team is getting the breaks and we defnitely got more than our share this game. In some ways feel sorry for Arizona in that they had very few breaks go their way. Thankfully for us they went our way. We need to talk about ball security though. Masoli needs to secure the ball better the whole game. I am not dogging him.. because he is the reason we won the game. I am sure Kelly talked to him about it and about making smart decisions passing the ball. I think we saw that in the 4th quarter. Our D really needs to step it up against Oregon State. We must contain the Rodger brothers and play a great defensive game. Allioti this one is up to you. Do you have the plan the execution to stop them? We know their D can not stop Oregon. Oregon has scored 40 points or more every game Masoli has started in the Pac 10.

Since there are roughly 15 offensive possessions per game, (I think the high for the season was Utah's 19, lots of 3 and out punts in that game), defensively can the Ducks muster 10 scoreless stops in this game? I am presuming the Ducks offense scores their average of 40, OSU's defense is not dominating.

Re: The only thing that scares me about what we saw in Tuscon...
I think Coach Kelly is making a mistake not to bring in Blount for those short yardage situations like the last one of the game. It took us 3 tries to punch it in from 2 yards out. If Masoli hadn't barely slipped between those 2 defenders, we would have faced a difficult 4th down decision. There were other situations like that where we needed short yardage for 1st downs.
I get that Blount is at the bottom of the depth chart, and I'm okay with that. But he is also a different style of runner, and when you need that different style you use him regardless of the depth chart. It is no different than in basketball, when you need either a shooter or a defensive specialist. Has he forgotten how Blount used to drag along the first 1 or 2 tacklers last year until more tacklers came along?

Re: The only thing that scares me about what we saw in Tuscon...
OSU's offense should get decent numbers against our D with the Rodgers brothers and Canfield is solid passing the ball. OSU doesn't have a dominant offensive line like they did in '06 but they've done solid enough against most teams. That said, I really think our offense will be potent against their D. The key for us will be exploiting OSU's weak DBs and it will open up the running game a lot easier since we don't have the dominant O-line we were blessed with last year (or at least they aren't that dominant yet). Should be a great game. Can't wait.

It is a tough call Raindux. Something I am not sure are correct on. I am not a coach mind ya but if I was coaching and saw Blount come in would defnitely key on him in that situation. By bringing him in an obvious situation it makes stopping him easier especially when has not played since Boise State. I understand fully what you are saying and perhaps if had been in before an obvious situation would not key on him so much.. but in an obvious situation most defenses will key on him. Just my opinion. I am not a coach so do not know. I would suspect though that Kelly has thought about it and reason he did not play him in that situation is he wanted the defenses to not key on him. He could go in maybe as a decoy.

I'm curious to see how we handle stephen peah up front, hes been playing really well lately and providing a ton of pressure up the middle. Another issue thats been bothering me is the pressure of the dline, alliotti seems to be bringing 3 again which hasnt worked at all the last two games. We need some nick reed hustle because getting pressure and eliminating those down field passes will be key. I think we'll bring a lot of pressure early to see if we can expose their young line (true frosh lt) and get to Canfield.

Cliff is going to have to have a big game... I have a feeling they might try to pick on him....
