The hospital next to campus is looking to close shop and move fully over to their Springfield hospital. Ill bet good money UO and even NW Christian will be interested in the land/facilities

Same here. Apparently the hospital kind of lied to the employees since they said nothing major was imminent a couple weeks ago when the nursing staff signed the new union deal. Now they sprung it on them and they're pretty livid.

While my dad was at RiverBend yesterday for a minor procedure, that was the general tone of most of the staff he and my mom talked to. A few said they might look elsewhere for a job, namely over at Mckenzie-Willamette in Springfield. I'm wondering what my ex-brother-in-law has to say about it since he's a head charge nurse in the ER (and I believe he may some duties within the nurses union) and his GF is a nurse over at the university district in the behavioral health unit.

People are unsure about where they'll be working in the next year and they don't trust the hospital group's leadership to tell them the truth or negotiate in good faith any more.

Prior to the modern system of in school training (changed in the 60s to 80s), all nurses were in hospital trained. NW christian (now Bushnell) already has a BSN, RN to BSN and MSN program so I could see them wanting to get some hospital facilities (as they are also right across the street)

They closed off a ton of beds(nearly half of all that were open) at Riverbend almost immediately and shifted/combined units, removed the ability of managers to schedule nurses for additional shifts to fill needs leaving only same day pickup making it harder for the nurses/units to plan, upped patient to nurse ratios to borderline unsafe levels since the new legislature doesn't go into effect until next July, and then with the bed closures a lot of nurses will have to float to other units they aren't trained on. Rumors are they are looking to sell riverbend as well so trying to make the books look good by not having as much overtime, but it seems so short sighted with how much they make even when paying out overtime.

This all just made the nurses jobs more difficult, less secure and just leaving a really bad feeling as it all was announced so quickly after they voted to ratify. I'm guessing Peacehealth thinks a lot of the nurses will move over to Riverbend from University(Sacred Heart) which would allow Riverbend to be more flexible and not have to pay overtime/travel nurses, but there's already an 8 hour wait time usually in the ER, not sure how that's gonna get better even with more nurses.

Back in April, they said they'd be closing 87 of the 455 beds they're licensed for but those could reopen as they started hiring over 200 new full-time nurses while phasing out travel nurses. The closure of the University District hospital feels like it's part of their move to cut beds and the movement of nurses over will count towards them hiring new staff at RiverBend. I don't think some of their changes are going to be well-accepted with how two-faced they seem to be with both the staff and the public.

Oh ya, they closed those 87 then, and then just closed a ton more some time last week again saying they'd open when the new grads are ready for hire. It's not a great look for sure.

OHSU's nurses up in Portland have also sent a shot across the bow by holding weekly organizing events, and I don't think the acquisition of Legacy is making them feel better because it worsens their leverage in negotiations.

It depends, legacy isn’t union so if all those nurses join the union their power at the bargaining table goes up. The concern is they will not know where they will be working or if they will be detailed to another hospital
