How will Masoli develop?

Post by odux »

I dont know if this has been discussed or not. But I got to thinking about Masoli today and how Dixon grew so much when Kelly arrived. And how much Masoli grew as the season went on. How much will Masoli develop seeing as this will be his second year under Kelly? We all know how great of a qb coach Kelly is. So what should we look for this year with Masoli? Will he read the zone option better? His passing will be better, we know that. But as far as his development, what should we see in his development?

Just wondering and cant wait for the season to start!

I'm not sure if anyone can know the answer to those questions for sure. I know that I would be happy to see him maintain the same production he ended last season with. More would be icing on the cake.

Of course, it takes a team. Line not giving enough protection, snap troubles... There are things that can interfere with our hopes. :)

I want to see better/quicker decision when he's dropping back for passes. When he first took over the starting job, his passing was shaky and timid. He obviously improved as last year went on, but I still think he has so much potential to grow into a better pocket passer.

The one thing that I think he needs to get better at is using a little finesse on some of his passes. There are times when having a cannon for an arm, make you think you can fit a pass in anywhere, but sometimes a little touch on the pass is more effective. On the other hand if Masoli became stuck at where he was for the last four games last year, I think we would still be awesome.

I agree with DDG on this one. Obviously he has stuff he can improve on, touch being a main one, but all players have things they can improve on. His understanding of the O and his leadership skills the last 4 games, was head and shoulders above DD as a SO or JR. I would bet if he just plays like the last 4 games the rest of his career UO wins at least 10 games each year and with a improved D, UO would be Pac-10 champs one of those years. Of course if you do the math, he would have thrown for over 3000 yds in a 13 game season and ran for over 1000, so he would probably be in NY also.

The job is Masoli's to lose, that's for sure. However, the plethora of talent behind him will help to keep him progressing. Spring practice reports keep praising Darron Thomas's talent and skill, while I've even heard that Costa's throwing and decision-making appear to be better than everyone's. Too bad about Nate, had he lived up to half his hype without his injury the Ducks would have won maybe 11 or 12 games last year.

I have a question about Masoli and hopefully someone will have an answer. His worst couple games were rainy, does anyone know if he has small hands? It just seemed like the Cal game especially his throws were really erratic. That is very understandable with the weather conditions, but I think it would be even worse if he had small hands trying to grip a soaked ball. Anyone shake the guys hands???

JM does have smaller hands than a lot of QBs, I remember a discussion about this from right after the Call Monsoon last season... Dixon had big hands, with very long fingers, so his grip in rainy/wet conditions was more secure.

I grew up with a graphic example of this difference... My older brother (A 6'9 basketball type) had hands that were large enough to easily palm a basketball, in any weather... Myself? If I placed my palm against his, I just barely reached to his first knuckle.

Size does matter! ;)

I don't really want to generalize, but I have a samoan friend who is built alot like Masoli (Faafiula 'Junior' Ena 2010 recruit out of Hermiston, Oregon) I'm trying to get his highlight reel up on Youtube so I can post it on C4Q and you guys can see him, he would for sure be a sleeper recruit. Anyways, thats my shameless plug of the day back on point. Junior has massive hands, massive. So I've never shook Masoli's hand personally, but I've been around Poly's that are similar size and build to masoli, and they all had rather large hands.

well you would have to post a now and then picture for that to be answered..If he gained as much as i did though, its safe to say Roper will be able to out run him!!

I've been to all the spring practices except yesterday's. Masoli is progressing just fine.

Costa knows the plays and routes better than anyone, due to time in the system, but he can't take hits and doesn't do the roll out drills to throw. I'm sure it's great to have him on the sidelines to help the others get a breakdown of their play.

DT has greatly improved his throwing motion and is a lightning bolt when he finds a seam to run. I still think he's at least a year away from being what we all envision. He'd only replace Masoli due to injury.

Roper is a solid drop back passer. The problem is that don't fit our team. He doesn't throw accurate when he has to roll out(that's what most of the drills are now) and only throws a nice ball when he can set his feet.

Masoli is getting coached up on the nuances of the position. How to add some touch. Split second reads and decisions(like throw it away out of bounds). How to not lock onto his reciever with his eyes. To look the defense off and throw out to a wide open TE or RB. And when he runs, it's the difference of a rhino coming at ya, or a gazelle like Dixon or Thomas. I'll take the rhino every time.

One thing we should all know by now,if Masoli does make a mistake and throw an int,or a ball into the ground. When there is a wide open guy 20 feet away.(AND HE WILL.)The kid will shake it off before the next play and it wont rattle him at all.Thats one thing coaches cant teach players. We should all be stoked that our multi-talented QB has that amazing gift. Among all his other super talents!!

I personally, would like to see Thomas red-shirt this year. So that when the 2010 season comes around, He'll have 3 years to play and 2 years to start.

I think if Masoli gets hurt this season, you bring in Costa before Roper and if it gets this Roper or Thomas, cut our loses and play Thomas.

But if Thomas can sit this year on the sideline with a clip board and a headset, I think that would be a huge bonus for us in the near future.
