Jarius Byrds' stock sliding

CB Jairus Byrd, Oregon (5-10, 207)
Byrd is a tough, physical corner who showcases fluid hips and good ball skills on all levels of the field. However, he may have restricted himself to more of a Cover 2-type role after his poor pro day performance. He was timed in the high 4.6 range (4.68 and 4.69) and will definitely struggle running with NFL receivers down the field in man coverage. He did showcase impressive quickness during the three-cone drill (6.75) and looks smooth in and out of his breaks on tape. But his lack of straight-line speed will hinder his draft stock and could push him out of the first three rounds.

Should have stayed for his senior year

If he doesn't get picked in the first few rounds then he definitely should have stayed at Oregon.

He is still predicted to go in the 3rd round so that is not bad but he is predicted to go to the Detroit Lions and that is really bad!

Every mock I've seen has him going mid to late 2nd.

That's what I had seen earlier but Rivals now has him sliding to the middle of the 3rd, who knows but whenever and wherever he goes I hope he gets a chance to play early and he does well!

They're saying his problem is his 40 speed. That's not something that normally really improves from year to year. Even if he slides, I'm not sure another year here would have done him much good.

Agreed. It was obvious that Jarius' speed was never there. He would do very well in a Cover-2 role, though. Never going to be a shutdown corner, though. I wonder if any teams are talking about him playing safety?

I just don't get the testing of speed drills. His 40 time has nothing to do with football, it has to do with him running. Throughout his career he's never had fantastic speed, but it was good enough. If a team was thinking of drafting him in the 2nd round but decided not to because he ran a slower than expected 40 time, then they are dumb. Lendale White doesn't run an impressive 40 time, but he's doing better than Reggie Bush.

I'm not sure his stock was ever that high to begin with. My guess is 3rd round to Chicago.

Im guessing he will go in the 3rd or 4th round. His 40 time was slow but his short shuttle was very impressive. I think he makes a great FS in the NFL. I dont think he can play CB in the NFL unless hes in a Cover 2 scheme.
