FISHDUCK'S FIRST SCRIMMAGE REPORT

Post by woundedknees »

It was a day for the passing game as we had experienced QBs taking on some newbies in the secondary?again a couple of RS freshmen trying to stay up with fleet receivers getting some precise passes. Darron Thomas did the run-mesh and pulled it out and headed right…and the TE slipped his block and pulled into the flat. DT turned his shoulders and delivered a zipped pass into the breadbasket of Ed Dickson for a nice first down. It was a better pass than I’ve seen in drills so far from DT, and the catch was a nine of ten as Dickson was being nailed in the back as his hands began to make contact on the ball. Great catch, and great retention of the ball after the hit was delivered into his back.

Masoli did have the benefit of wide-outs who have been well coached against some newbie DBs. Even when placed with the 2nd and 3rd teamers…we saw JM throw some tasty ones. He threw a lazor to walk-on Sean Dailey and a gasping looper TD to Dion Jordan that was just so catchable and sweet for the RS freshman. When they get wide open down the right sideline….THAT open…..it’s hard to carry out the throw and catch when you get buck fever. Yet he did it then and on another play when he rolled out left to open space in front after a superb fake to the RB…and spotted Pflugrad WIDE OPEN crossing right to left between Barner and Lewis. The throw was money…on the numbers and in stride as Aaron easily ran into the end zone after a 30 yard pass. This is much different passing attack than last fall….but how would it be with Byrd and Chung back there? Unknown yet.

Other comments…..we seemed to ignore the TE today or the defense was so intent upon covering them that the wide-outs had their opportunities. I thought that the QBs passed surprisingly well, but sometimes JM gets happy feet in taking off running when the hole really isn’t there. Roper had a TD that was duplicate of the one he had against the Beavers two years ago where he kept it on the option and easily cruised into the end zone. Defense was intense and hitting well….but gave up WAY TOO MUCH for this early. Offensive linemen looked weak at times, thus few opportunities for the RBs to show their stuff. Terrence Montgomery made some plays as he blew up two in a row on a screen and another play for a TFL…yet he’s on 3rd team for now. Way, WAY too many plays were busted before they began due to poor snaps. It just destroys the timing of the play, and on 3rd down…it is a drive killer.

Another excellent post by fishduck.

Of all our units, OL is actually starting to sound like the one that needs the most work.

The good thing is we are very deep, but lack of experience might be trouble early on.

Given our early schedule we will not need trouble early on.. with games against Boise State there and a home game with Utah. I am not real worried just pointing out we have to be on our game from the start.

The Ducks aren't deep on the offensive line, that is part of the problem. You would like to have around 12 offensive linemen on scholarship before the freshman class joins, increasing that number to around 15 when they do. Instead, the Ducks only have 8 offensive linemen on scholarship (9 if you count Ward), not counting the incoming freshmen. That is why the two-deep is filled with a bunch of walk-ons and the Ducks had to move tight end Ward and walk-on defensive lineman Conrad Davis to the offensive line.

I'm gonna say fishduck embellishes the truth a lilttle bit. His description of Jamere Holland's touchdown wasn't what the catch actually was. He described it as Holland went up and shielded Thurmond's body with his, and caught the ball at it's highest point. Well the way I say it was Holland got a few steps on Thurmond and Roper just threw a nice ball, and Thurmond tried to make a play on the ball cause he knew he wasn't gonna get to Holland, and Holland caught it at his rib cage. Unless he was talking about a different catch, but I'm too lazy to go back and check.

9 very talented OL seems like a fine rotation to win us games (Last year we had 12, but 5 of them were freshmen....). Over half these guys are 4 star prospects. The problem is, most of these guys are inexperienced.

Mark Asper
Nick Cody
C.E. Kaiser
Jordan Holmes
Bo Thran
NaDerris Ward
Darrion Weems
Carson York
Charlie Carmichael

And we have 7 walk ons. I don't see how depth is that big of an issue for this season.

With that being said, I think it's important for this recruiting class for us to bolster our line with a few more commits.

I know this is going to draw some flack from lots of people but I don't care.

I've always admired Fishducks writing style and how he remembers so much without notes, but beware if you criticize Fishduck even in jest, as an admirer or not, he will take his ball & go home. he gives new meaning to thin skinned egocentric.

That's why it works better to read FishDuck's postings here... Where they are obtained through a link from a neutral site.

IDK if anybody has figured out how to block the posting of links from open forums.
