How was that first scrimmage? I’m not sure as I noted a couple of indicators that gave me mixed signals? I’ll review that and more so settle back with your beverage for my final scrimmage report of the spring.
Defense usually dominates at this time, but with 5-6 TDs….that was not the case. However the D-Line was stuffing the running plays nearly every time, with the only major rushes coming from Blount bouncing tacklers off him and barreling for 8-9 yards. It is a curious thing hearing the crack of the pads up in the stands as a safety blasts LaGarrett, but the safety pings away and Blount keeps the feet churning and picks up more tacklers until they finally bring him down. I like how he’s reading the holes and then lowering the shoulder like he’s an old fullback. Every team needs a Blount weapon….and we gotta soak up the big plays and amazing runs through his final season for us.
JM threw a lofter up into the corner of the end zone and since the DB had his back to it…he couldn’t know that it was coming down right in front of where they were running. Aaron laid out and curled in front of the DB to catch the ball just inches above the ground! Wow. Tremendous body control and a very confident pass by Masoli; he didn’t throw a heater….he threw a perfect ball to be easily caught where his WR had a play on it. It’s the type of pass that usually comes later when you know your Wide-outs better, but he’s doing it now!
Roper does the mesh and rolls out to the right in the same play we saw DT hit Dickson earlier. This time you can SEE Roper check the TE…and see that he’s covered and has a safety lurking for a pick. In micro-seconds we see him check downfield to two other WRs and he spots #19 getting some space on his defender in deep cross from left to right. Justin sends up a spiral with some arc to it and now we see Holland waiting for it again as I saw last week. As the ball approaches Holland and the DB who has closed on the play…it is apparent that the DB can make a play on it and knock it down. Jamere then jumped up and leaned into the DB to get leverage and get the highest point between the two….and then he reached up and nabbed the TD over the defensive back.
Littlejohn is an interesting player to watch as he is quite fast and reminds me of the fullback we had in 1994 with some monster thighs. He strikes me as someone on FG defense who could be strong in driving the man back, yet fast enough to get the job done. We saw that as he blitzed up the middle and the RB was helpless against him; sack for BL! (and it killed a drive)
There's lots more to read, so enjoy and debate to your hearts content.
