SI/Andy Staples Top 25

Post by freedjr »

Andy Staples at SI has the Ducks 8th in the pre-season. Agree with the poll or not, it's this kind of love couples with a great season that can catapult Oregon into a BCS game!

"Spring recap: There should be little dropoff now that Chip Kelly has replaced Mike Bellotti as head coach. Despite a somewhat inexperienced line, Kelly will have plenty of talent on offense. Defensive coordinator Nick Alliotti has an excellent group of linebackers at his disposal in Paysinger, Casey Matthews and Eddie Pleasant. "

I think it is a little high, but somewhere in the top 15 is about right.

Maybe a bit high, but there's only 1 or 2 teams behind us that I'd probably rank higher...

And then again, I feel we are better than OK State and V-Tech, so who knows.

IMO, a bit high; were it week 5 and the Ducks had successfully navigate that first 4 game gauntlet with wins I would say feasible. College football nowdays is about rank positioning so take the love as you can get it. The highter you are the better chance of surviving a loss and still making the BCS series.

Yep exactly... start touting that #8 ranking now, heavy and often, because rankings are fleeting. Rankings are all about perception in the first half of the season. It gains actual substance in the second half.

I don't think that Ducks should feel guilty about being ranked high pre-season. They've ended seasons up there a number of times after starting much lower. So, it's about time that they get recognition up front for where they can reasonably be expected to end up.

The Ducks would play 5 Top 25 teams if this were accurate, pretty strong strength of schedule, if the Ducks only lose one game they could play for a NC possibly: #4 USC, #12 Boise State, #18 Oregon State, #19 Utah, and #20 Cal

Most likely with this schedule, that might be the case.....Of course, there is also the possibility that we might run the table....
Oh how gr8 would that be......Hey, I have my dreams too.....No matter how dilusional they may appear....

Yeah, I like the preseason top 8. And it is a good thing to bring up over and over so the Pac 10 can seem stronger than maybe it will be. Just don't mention he picked ND to be top 25 material. It makes the rest of it look like garbage. With ND's schedule, they should go undefeated and barely crack the top twenty-five. But they will probably get nine wins and a top fifteen and then next year start out top ten before they fall on their faces.

The nice thing about getting a high pre-season ranking whether it is deserving or not is as long as the Ducks take care of business and win all of their games or even only loss one it puts them already near the top and if teams ahead of them loss a couple of games Oregon is right there in the NC mix whereas if the Ducks are ranked lower or unranked that opportunity takes a big hit so I would be happy if the Ducks started the season ranked higher than they should, why shouldn't they, Georgia, Clemson, Auburn, Ole Miss........ those teams are almost always ranked way higher than they should be to start the season!
