we should get a much improved hawaii team this year. they were very young last season. i think they return their entire rotation. arakawa is a legit #1, reed outdueled him last year (we won 3-0) but he definitely gave us fits. their other two guys aren't bad, either. their offensive stats don't pop out at you, but they had a lot of turnover in the line-up and a lot of young guys played. they should be better across the board this time around.

minjares (short) and kruger (catcher) won their position battles.

heineman will bat lead-off.

Kruger?? Wow that's impressive. Sucks for Graham and Chase.

I wonder if offensively he adds more than the other 2? thoughts?

i would imagine that's the case. i thought graham handled his defensive responsibilities well, but perhaps he hadn't developed as a hitter like Horton had hoped.

it's official, I now look forward to opening day in baseball more than I do the first football game of the year.

every run by both sides was unearned. very sloppy first outing.

for those that missed it:

the hawaii 2B dropped an easy kruger pop up in the 4th (which scored garlick from second) that would have ended the inning, then catalano smacked a double that scored kruger from first. 2-0 ducks.

thorpe let two on in the 5th w/ no outs, then heineman had an error at 3B which loaded them up. thorpe ended up walking one in, then we just missed an inning ending DP which plated another on the fielder's choice. 2-2 game.

ducks won in the 9th after the rainbows quickly retired the first two batters. catalano walked, balta walked, heineman struck out swinging but the ball got away from the catcher, and catalano scored all the way from second.

3 runs on 3 hits for oregon, as i said... sloppy. only 6 k's, we put the ball in play a lot, but not much found holes.

thorpe cruised through 4, got a little wild in the 5th, then came back and finished the 6th. 4 walks, hopefully that was just rust. freshman trent paddon made his debut in the 7th and and punched out the first two rainbows, porter clayton notched the final out. cleavinger dominated the 8th, as he's apt to do, and reed picked up his first save in the 9th.

cleavinger picked up the win, making him 10-0 in his oregon career.
