on the eve of conference season, my ideal line-up:

2B payne .321/.463/.377
CF grebeck .275/.356/.350
RF baumgartner .391/.451/.531
1B tolman .271/.377/.458
DH garlick .358/.444/.547
3B heineman .161/.200/.226
LF balta .271/.379/.438
C graham .235/.316/.294
SS karaviotis .269/.290/.308

absolutely no reason to move payne out of the lead-off spot, he's playing like his 2012 self again. his #'s have jumped considerably since taking over for heineman, and he's setting the table as well as anyone in the pac-12. grebeck is holding his own in center, and both baumgartner and garlick are raking. i'd like to see tolman liven up a bit, but by no means has he played poorly. heineman needs to be moved down, and the 6-hole is probably the best place for him at the moment. when he starts hitting -- and he's too good not to -- he'll be a great asset in protecting garlick. balta has firmly entrenched himself in the every day line-up, and it's great to see him develop a little power. i'd still rather see graham catching than kruger at this point. and karaviotis has rightfully claimed the job at short, and did nothing to give it back against ohio state.

Yeah to me the job should be Karaviotis' from here on out. Even his fielding has been pretty consistent. I'd like to see Chase over Graham personally, Graham strikes out too much. Plus Chase going yard once gives me hope he's getting his bats together.

Anyway, I like our lineup overall.

I like the lineup too, however a couple notes. I was in Hawaii for those games (I live now in Hawaii) and I can tell you Heineman did not look comfortable at 3rd. From what I could tell watching live feeds on my computer, Tolman has looked way better at 3rd. Watching Heinemen take warm up throws at 3rd was ugly. You could tell making that throw from 3rd to 1st was in his head (it would take him forever to line everything up then he'd aim it to first), as even his warm up throws were all over the place. I wouldn't be against moving Heineman back to center, keep Tolman at 3rd, Balta at 1st, Grebeck in LF and Garlick as DH. Also, while Tolman's average is down a little, he's 4th in the Pac in RBI's and thats what I want from my clean up batter. I'll take that production all day long.

Finally, word I'm getting from friends, is Payne has reinjuried his labrum in shoulder and might be done for year (fielding wise). Obviously that would be horrible for Aaron and the team. I heard it was getting checked out this week however haven't heard what the report was that came back. Hopefully just a sprain.

Let's sweep USC this weekend and get league off on a great start.

that's very interesting about heineman. i wonder if it was shoulder related? the coaches kept with heinemen at 3B in 2012 despite an awful offensive showing because he was rock solid at the position. tolman lost his job at 3B last year to hambright due to being not-so-good defensively.

that's not to say tolman hasn't gotten better, i can't honestly say i recall paying too much attention to heineman's defense those first two weeks. something to keep an eye on.

Tolman is racking up those RBIs also. Up to 24 RBIs on the season (Next closest is 13).
