Any chance?

Post by AnarchistDuck »

Does anybody think that there's a chance the Coach might allow Lagarrette to come back?

Personally, I don't. It would just be way to much of a PR hit and Chip already said there's no chance. I can't imagine him going back on his word.

I think it's very unlikely. But, you never know.

He could just say that he made a rash judgment, Blount has been doing everything he is supposed to and he would like to correct his mistake.

There would undoubtedly be a week or two of hysteria and questions they would have to deal with. But, George Washington took the fall for chopping down the cherry tree. I certainly would hope that, if Kelly feels that he made a mistake, he wouldn't not correct it due to PR concerns.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

IMO, there's no way to win in bringing him back. Two scenarios come to mind:

1) We need him, so we bring him back. The program will be looked down upon by EVERYONE, saying we just brought him back for on the field football reasons. Bad PR move. Oregon is perceived as a win-at-all-costs program, allowing bad behavior and therefore potentially jeopardizing recruiting efforts.

2) We find out we don't need him, so...well, we don't need him...no reason to bring him back.

Proper move would have been to suspend him indefinitely, giving proper time to decide on the length of suspension. They could have played everything out week to week. They blew it.

I agree that indefinite was right and they blew it. But, I see a 3rd option: It's the right thing to do for the student athlete and it would be unfair to stick with a mistake that damages his career out of PR fears.

The bad PR is going to be there if we do nothing or if we do something. There will always be fans of other schools and conferences that use these things to criticize their opponents. Think about our uniforms. Is that good or bad PR? We sure hear a constant stream of insults about them. I know Beaver fans that called Blount a thug before this incident.

Just saying that I don't think PR should factor in at all when you're talking about jeapardizing the future of a player, whom your mandate is to teach and look out for. PR is just making sure that you clearly articulate and sell why what you are doing is the right thing to do. And in this case, I think it would be right to correct the excessive punishment to Blount, regardless of what Beaver fans and Canzano would say.

Also a chance that IF Chip allows Kelly to come back, the NCAA will have something to say about its own suspension

I don't think he's playing again

Absolutely not. He would look weak & will have a PR nightmare on his hands. Even though some people believe it was too stiff of a penalty (myself included), he will not be able to undo what is done.

Completely agreed, other than the "myself included" bit. Even if he changed his mind and wanted to bring him back, he'd have to come up with a damn good justification if he doesn't want to look soft.

I dont think the NCAA can do anything about this situation as it was outside of an actual game. But I dont think they should bring him back, would look horrible. Do think they should have made it indefinate so he couldve had the chance though.

I think that correcting a punishment that could severely impact a kids future qualifies as damn good justification.

I wonder if the NCAA could affect the decision in both ways. For instance, if Blount could appeal to them to enforce a lighter sentence after showing completed anger management courses, community service, etc.

I meant a justification that significantly changed the situation.

And no, they can't. It is the coaches decision whether to play Blount or not, and Kelly has simply said that Blount won't play again this season. That's all the punishment is. He's still on the team and on scholarship.

True. The best they could do is offer another year of eligibility.

However, as you note, he is still on the team and Kelly would not be required to give any reason whatsoever to play him again.

But Kelly is not going to. Blount made his own bed by attacking fellow teammates and security, fans and Hout. He's not coming back because he didn't control his emotions. It's too bad, the best case scenario is that he practices hard, gets an invite to the Combine and gets drafted. It's silly and delusional to think that he's going to come back and play in a game for the Oregon Ducks. His suspension was stiff, but not unfair.
