Agree that Pellum has served UO honorably and is a good man. But Oregon is the only employer he's ever had - professionally speaking. Also, not sure why you think Pellum's feelings are the determining factor in the argument.
I didn't mean to say his feelings should be the only determining factor. But if such a move like that is in the interests of the team, then his feelings may be the biggest factor. The majority of people would probably rather resign than take a demotion -- and not because resigning would be the right or better thing, but it's easier to save face if you're not in the spotlight.

You do make a great point about what's needed to change the unit's identity. Don't forget, though, that we saw the offense undergo quite the transformation when Chip came on as offensive coordinator and much of our staff remained in place. We also saw Alliotti's defenses become more aggressive when Chip became his higher-up. So Pellum could very well remain on staff and the D could be just fine; we'll just have to wait and see.

Perhaps there's truth to the rumors of him retiring after NSD. Or, as has been speculated here, perhaps his demotion is somewhat probationary and was meant to last at least until we knew who the new DC would be (and to determine whether they could fit well together).

I'm telling you, this penny has Abraham Lincoln on it.

No, clearly it's the Lincoln Memorial.

Well, what Kimber and I are saying is slightly different. We're both addressing the Peter Principle, but where the Pellum situation is unique is he has the opportunity to be demoted to the most recent position in which he excelled. That's an opportunity that most people don't get (and wouldn't want) in the private sector, in part because usually those positions don't happen to be open at the moment when the demotion would happen. And also because of personal pride.

If we turned Nolan away because he wanted to replace one assistant then that's pretty disappointing. Especially if that assistant was Pellum.

I'm still very happy with the Hoke hire. Should really change the culture within the defense.

In his SiriusXM interview today, he said he basically got the job 5-6 days ago but it was finalizing the contract that delayed the announcement.

The Michigan insider today posted his thoughts on Hoke, and honestly he seems to think pretty highly of him. Said even though Hoke didn't wear the headset, he was still really involved in gameplaning D, and also involved during the games with the d. He also said he does a excellent job of finding diamonds in the rough on the DL, also echoed what we've heard all along that he's a great recruiter. Really he blames a lot of the stuff that happened at Michigan on the AD at that time. Also said all the players were pissed when Hoke was fired, also most of the D still gave him props for this year because of his coaching and teaching while at UM. Overall if he has the impact he had on the players there, the kids are going to love him and play their butts off for him.

Oregon needs Hoke to make the same cultural change on D that Kelly did for the O in 2007. The cupboard is not bare on that side of the ball and having a strong alpha personality could be exactly what this team needs. Helfrich, Pellum and Frost do/did not seem to be the guys that would fire a team up emotionally when it was needed. Maybe Hoke brings the scheme and intensity. Time will tell.
