I think this game against Cal will be the defining game for Masoli. If he plays bad again and we lose maybe it's time for change. Last year they had no one else to go to since Harper and Thomas were true freshman and Costa and Roper were hurt.
Now is a different scenario with Costa who actually should know the offense better than Masoli and is a better passer,( remember when Bellotti and Chip said that if Costa was healthy when Dixon went down they wouldn't have missed a beat.) that, says a lot about Costa.
"I feel good," Costa said. "I think I look pretty good out here, too. My speed's back already, I'm making some good cuts out there. My knee's healthy - that's not a factor at all.
Thomas just has great skills and is much more familiar with the offense this year on top of gaining weight, speed and experience. Really hope we red shirt him for what I think will be a great future.
The Defining Moment...We shall see , I'll be rooting very hard for Masoli and hope he has a Heisman type game against Cal.
Go Ducks and go Masoli .

Re: The defining moment for Masoli
The best option for Thomas and our program (assuming you believe he is good) is to redshirt him this season.
If you don't want your 3 months ago "heisman" candidate out there, Costa is your man.
Bear in mind, the coaches know 100x more about their QB's than you possibly could, and that they will only make changes that they think will increase our chances of winning. I stated in another post that I think Costa is good, but he won't see the field as the No. 1 QB unless Masoli stays at or gets worse than his current status, or gets injured. They didn't waiver last year after 46 passing yards vs UCLA, although Thomas had already broken his redshirt possibility and could have replaced him. The rest of the season turned out ok sticking with Masoli right?
Just like last season, they won't waiver here either, the coaches believe in Masoli (therefore, you should too). The number one reason why there will be no waivering is because Masoli will begin to play better, starting this week and throughout the remainder of the season, he just needs to follow the recipe.
Plant feet, square shoulder's, step into throw, hit receiver in the numbers, avoid throwing on the run when possible (which I think is not his strong suit) and simply calm down a bit. I think he may be a bit rattled from all the pre-season hype, followed by the disaster the was our first game. It doesn't mean we can't turn it around, after all we did beat a team with 16 straight wins, in a game that we let be much closer than it should have, with I think 4 complete passes for less than 100 yards. We might be kinda good with a fully functional offense. I'm ok with positive thinking for now.....

Re: The defining moment for Masoli
The question is, what will it take this week from Masoli for him to keep starting?
My personal opinion is one or fewer turnovers, 150+ yards passing, a 55% completion percentage, and at least one passing touchdown. Those really aren't that high of expectations. If he can't reach those, I think it's time to make a change and salvage the season. (We WILL be 2-2 if Masoli can't play up to those numbers. We're not good enough to have no passing game and beat Cal.)

First of all, I played at a very High level of football. Much higher than coach Kelly, so the fact that you said the coaches know 100X more about about their QB's than I do, I take exception. They probably do know 100x more than you.
They didn't waiver last year after the UCLA game was because it was ONE game. He has now played badly in 3 straight games, If Masoli plays badly against Cal and we lose, I will bet you things will change. Like I said I'm rooting for the kid and hope he plays lights out.

Re: The defining moment for Masoli
I mean they see everything that you don't unless you are a coach, they know things you don't about each player specifically, everyday. That is what I mean by 100x more. Even if you played in the NFL, you don't know what happens on the inside of the team, and why the coaches haven't thought twice about sticking with Masoli... The reason is because they think he is good and gives the team the best chance to win at quarterback... OBVBigducker wrote:re:rcook
