DASL Roundtable
Welcome to DASL's first ever Roundtable! This session includes Marzeial, FlDuckFan, dennocj, catch 922, pudgejeff, and jibbajabba614. Enjoy.
1. Oregon Ownage just recently released an updated GM Rankings, which can be seen here. Which GM is rated too high and which GM is rated to low?
Marzeial
Too Low: EasyE - Even before winning the championship, Easy has done a good job of building up the Blazers into a good contender. Better than being considered in the bottom half of the league. Adding a championship obviously boost him Easy a top 10 rating.
Too High: Broph - Riding a wave from an early championship and has been pretty consistent. Not sure that results in being the 6th best GM in the DASL. Still probably a top 10 person, but I would think it would be closer to 10 than it would be 5.
FlDuckFan
TK is ranked way to low if we’re ranking people on their DASL history. As for who’s rated to high I think I’d move the Wolves down below BradBuss and rpmunn. I tend to give up and begin rebuilding a few seasons to early and trade away elite players while they’re still young and on contract.
dennocj
This may be a bit out of left field but I honestly believe Dave was rated too low. Shocking I know, considering he was ranked 4th, but it seems like every season we have to worry about the Cavs. Dave always finds a way to make some trades that build his team up to at the very least a playoff caliber team. I just believe that his ability to roll with any FA losses or even constantly having late first round picks, he always builds a team with great potential. For who I believe was rated too high, nray30. I think he definitely should be around the top 15th area, but I wouldn't have him ahead of jibba. The Clippers have constantly been right there and just not able to break through, but they've constantly had solid players with the ability to compete. And as noted in the rankings. I think sometimes the Clips handcuff themselves with large contracts and no first round picks. I do need to preface this by saying I think the ratings are pretty close to spot on.
catch 922
I feel like Satah might be ranked a bit higher than he should be. I feel like he got Lebron and it was game over, it would be hard to build a failing team around that in a Western Conference that hasn't been the strongest in a while.
Nray30 might bee too low but he's still a little fresh to tell where he actually lies on this list. He inherited a pretty good Clippers team and has somewhat maintained it for a little while now. Also been a bit unlucky in playoff sims (losing a 3-1 series is awful)
pudgejeff
Too high - Satah - Should have leveraged their assets and future to win with Bron/Roy.
Too low - EaZyE - Made the Warriors great before, and now has taken the Blazers to the elite tier.
jibbajabba614
Personally I feel Blazers should definitely be higher in the rankings. Even though he hasn't done much in the league as far as trading, he made a huge move in signing Al Horford to establish himself as a western conference contender. As far as who should be lower, Rockets haven't done much since the Chapman era. As far as their draft picks, DeRozan was a great pickup. But after so many years, that's one guy out of how many drafts. They have went through free agency to never pick up elite talent. So I would say Rockets haven't impressed me much over the last few years.
2. Which GM would you choose to sit down for a couple hours and have dinner with?
Marzeial
Dave - He seems to have a pure passion for this, coupled with the fact that Dave has stated he works in scouting or something in those regards makes him my choice.
FlDuckFan
I don’t really know any of the GM’s personally but Zyme , TK, Pudge, & Broph have always been pleasant to deal with in both PM’s and posts. My only problem would be if the conversation turned to real life basketball as I know little to nothing about what’s been going on since about 2010.
dennocj
My choice for this would have to be either Dave or Ownage. I'd like to have dinner with Dave to talk to him more about the Sports Marketing Agency he runs. Having always been around sports and continuing my career in sports I feel that I could learn a lot about the field. Ownage has given me a ton of advice throughout my time and is always available for help. Just seems to be an all around good dude.
catch 922
Ownage brought me into the league and has been a good friend for a bit now so it'd be between him or my brother (the Pacer's GM).
pudgejeff
Dave, every day of the week!
jibbajabba614
I would have to say Dave. Only because he has controversial and I feel like I would have a long discussion about basketball. I'm sure we could sit for two hours and talk about who is the better player between Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Pudge is another guy I could probably sit and talk about their opinions on basketball. But I don't know much about how he feels about the NBA and the players in it.
3. If you could change one thing about this league it would be ___________.
Marzeial
More late round/2nd round gems. Not saying there needs to be a ton, but I would love to see either more quality coming out of the back end or a gem a little more often. It would make those picks a little more valuable.
FlDuckFan
We need to enforce penalties on guys not posting depth charts, and I’d also like to see some way to make the league a little more interactive like a live stream once a month or league chat day. Our issue tends to be attendance and we need a way to keep new GM’s engaged and wanting to come back.
dennocj
I would love if there were an easier way to contact owners, such as the apps that were brought up recently. Close to trade deadline time, I had sent out multiple messages regarding offers and I only had about 2 responses, 1 of which was after the deadline had passed. I realize this is for recreation and isn't super important in the grand scheme of things, but better communication tools would be awesome. Also, this is really petty and sort of dumb, but since we've caught up to almost current time, I would love if the team names were switched to what they currently are. Like Wizards instead of Bullets. Again, that's not a real issue though haha
catch 922
I understand this probably wouldn't be for everyone but I'd like to see more of the inner workings of the game. Maybe pick a game every few sims with top teams playing each other and taking screenshots of the game or posting play by plays(if even possible).
pudgejeff
Expanding the playoffs to live sim's the whole time would be legit.
jibbajabba614
I would say changing the Supersonics to the Thunder. Enjoyed my experience in the league. Don't have much to complain about.
4. Complain about any one GM.
Marzeial
Zyme - Stop being so damn consistent.
FlDuckFan
I think the easy answer would be Dave but I can’t complain about someone who starts conversations about how to improve the league. I think my complaint is with BradBuss for sitting on his talent for so long before actually competing.
dennocj
I sound like a broken record. But Dave constantly makes it out to seem as though the world is out to get him. Whether it be a glitch in the FA system, a vetoed trade, or even not raising the cap space, it's always a witch hunt against Dave. There's a difference between bringing up complaints and actually suggesting viable solutions. His cap space issue isn't a true issue to this point. I think he always is trying to better the league, but it comes along with a ton of whining and complaints.
catch 922
I'm sure he will get a lot of complaints because of his personality, but Dave. Some of his complaints aren't always constructive.
pudgejeff
I think Boom brings very little to the league, he sits around tanking, signing FA to one year deals and selling off. I think it's a detriment and something that has hurt the league quite a bit and helped keep teams mediocre and down.
jibbajabba614
Well I wouldn't say one particular GM. I would say the childish reactions towards some people. Not a fan of name calling or things of that nature.
5. If you could convince one GM who previously ran a team in DASL to rejoin the league, which GM would it be?
Marzeial
DD10Snoop and Lukey. I know it said one, but I would love to see two of the pantheon GM's come back.
FlDuckFan
This is easy dd10snoop28, we’ve yet to have someone rival his ability to put a team together. I think Marzeial and Zyme are the closest GM’s we have.
dennocj
Snoop, hands down. He ran one of the better organizations in the league and was always available for questions if I ever had one. He was always highly active in the league as well. I think league activity fell a little when Snoop bounced out.
catch 922
Snoop, dude was annoying as hell to play against but it was pretty fun watching him build teams each season.
pudgejeff
Lukey, he was always wheeling and dealing. Maybe Eddy, he was good for a few crazy deals.
jibbajabba614
I would say Snoop. I would enjoy to see what he does with one of the worst franchises in the league. I got in the league right when he had Nash, Manu, Peja. And I personally didn't think they would be that great.
6. If you could GM any team going into next year, it would be ___________.
Marzeial
Suns. Too much young talent to not have fun with.
FlDuckFan
Trailblazers are loaded with young talent that is already locked up for a while. While most teams in the west look to be in rebuilding mode they have a relatively easy path to the playoffs where they should be a top 3 seed next year.
dennocj
Either the Nets or the Suns. They both have loads of talent returning and are only missing a piece or two. I think my Pacers are close to being there, I just need to figure out how to work the team together as a whole.
catch 922
The Nets are built extremely well to compete really well for a few seasons so I would definitely love to take them over.
pudgejeff
Bucks - They have such a clean slate, all their picks and some extra assets. Would be fun to try to build from the bottom.
jibbajabba614
I would pick Kings. LeBron and Roy is a great 1 2 punch.
7. What's the worst move you've seen an active GM make?
Marzeial
Previously, anything involving Eddy. He sure did swing for the fences including his Drexler trade. I remember the Hakeem trade being really bad too.
FlDuckFan
Most recently I’d have to say Wolves shipping Hinrich to the magic for only a 1st. We could have gotten way more for him if I had been patient instead I got what’s probably going to be a late 1st round pick for an elite PG. I know it says active GM but for history’s sake though I’d say any trade that Eddy did back in the early years.
dennocj
I would say probably either the Shawn Marion deal for $20+ million or my own by resigning Fred Jones to that terrible deal. He was a great player, but there are very few players worth more than $14 million. Neither GM's are active, but that Chris Paul trade a few seasons back was like watching a cow get slaughtered. I understand not posting a depth chart, but that was highway robbery.
catch 922
My Tim Duncan contract...
pudgejeff
DennocJ - Either when he traded Korver and 2 future 1st's for an aged Derek Lee when his team was garbo, or when he Gave Dwight Howard to get them back lulz.
jibbajabba614
Probably my first move for KG. I didn't pay much attention to previous stats. I just looked at the ratings and thought he could be a top 10 player.
8. Which division has the best set of GMs?
Marzeial
Central - Having won 4 of the last 8 championships, the top end GM's in the Central make it the choice. It's a tough decision however, the Atlantic is probably the most consistent with Pudge, Skyhooker, Zyme and the recently returned Tk. The Midwest is also strong having Broph, Boom, OregonOwnage, FL and Bells but the lack of championships doesn't help.
FlDuckFan
This is easy, the Atlantic division is by far the hardest. Going against Pudge and Zyme every season is tough especially with their ability to deconstruct and build them back up to championship caliber teams.
dennocj
The central and the Atlantic are by far the best sets. For overall though I would probably have to say the Atlantic. Adding TK to the mix with Pudge, Skyhooker and Zyme. That's going to be a tough division for a while. The central is very close though with Marziel, Dave, Jibba.
catch 922
It would have to be between the two East divisons. I would have to say Atlantic right now because of TK and Pudge playing at a pretty good level right now.
pudgejeff
Atlantic has the most top end talent, Central has the most depth.
jibbajabba614
Honestly Atlantic, Central and Midwest all are ruthless divisions. Right now Atlantic is the top dog. Sometimes it's Central and sometimes it's Midwest. All depends on what the GM is trying to do. But I would say most of the GM's from those divisions hate tanking.
9. Boxers or briefs?
Marzeial
Boxer Briefs
FlDuckFan
Got to go with Boxer briefs.
dennocj
I personally prefer boxer-briefs. But i guess to actually answer this question since it says boxers OR briefs, I'd have to go with boxers. Briefs are like constant wedgies to me. Boxer-briefs give the perfect amount of comfort-ability.
catch 922
Boxers, just so much more comfortable.
pudgejeff
Briefs, gotta have some cradle going on.
jibbajabba614
Boxers are great. Briefs are great. Freeballing is great too.
10. Championship-less GM you would like to finally see win a championship? (Celtics, Heat, Nets, Bullets, Bulls, Pistons, Pacers, Mavericks, Timberwolves, Jazz, Grizzlies, Clippers, Suns)
Marzeial
Timberwolves. I would love to see FL finally break through. Has been through it all and has yet to catch the break.
FlDuckFan
Timberwolves, we’ve got the worst luck in the league when it comes to the playoffs.
dennocj
Besides myself with the Pacers, I'd love to see the Mavericks or the Pistons win one. Ownage has done a ton for the league and is constantly running a good team. The Pistons had a good run with Jalen Rose a few years back and I felt they deserved to win one during one of those seasons, but weren't fortunate enough to do so.
catch 922
The Jazz, going to the finals 3 times and losing all 3 is kinda painful.
pudgejeff
Jazz! Been so close so many times and the injury bugaboo has gotten them a few times when they had a real shot.
jibbajabba614
Bulls, even if I didn't run the team I would still pull for them. Their have been times when I get busy that I would rather someone take over but I honestly feel I'm the best person to bring a ring to Chicago.
1. Oregon Ownage just recently released an updated GM Rankings, which can be seen here. Which GM is rated too high and which GM is rated to low?

This is so true lol. Definitely wouldn't mind being able to go back when I started playing and changing a few things that I did, but I'm sure everyone would say the same. Thanks pudge for bringing up old wounds lol

I like that all the answers to number 7 were different. Nice to see the different takes on what was the worst moves, I personally forgot about most of those until reading this and now feel a little better about my Duncan contract.

I thought I finished my answer for #7 - Me, not resigning Lou Williams after I got him for the MIN the year before he blew up.
I guess I deleted that response but that is why it starts with Previously...

Re: DASL Roundtable
The issue in past seasons is that teams preferred veterans so some of the "gems" got replaced as no one picked them up. I dont know how the game decides who to delete and replace but I do notice alot of younger players just disappearing.More late round/2nd round gems. Not saying there needs to be a ton, but I would love to see either more quality coming out of the back end or a gem a little more often. It would make those picks a little more valuable.

I believe if they're not signed throughout the offseason/season...the program replaces them.Oregon Ownage wrote:The issue in past seasons is that teams preferred veterans so some of the "gems" got replaced as no one picked them up. I feel like the guys who responded should get points as well (If they haven't already done an article).

I'm game for hanging out with any of you guys. I'll be in NY, Indiana, LA, Charlottesville (UVA), San Fran, Philly, and maybe Phoenix for Final Four. If any of you guys live around there let's meet up.UOducksTK1 wrote:Dave is the most complained about, yet the most picked to have dinner with.

I'm not shy about having opinions. I know sometimes it comes off as bullish but I mean it in the best way.
These round tables are fun. Thanks to al who participated. The league is definitely in a great place

If Oregon finds it way into the final four, I will be there and would be up for getting dinner for sure!dave wrote:I'm game for hanging out with any of you guys.
