Interesting. If the Buckeyes complete a pass, it wouldn't matter. Since they didn't, only five yard penalty. Holding or P.I. would be way more yards, so almost could believe they picked that particular penalty.

I also wonder if the fans storming the field helped the refs make up their mind about the clock expiring. It looked like they could have left a tick on the clock in review if they wanted to. it was that close.

If that’s true that’s some of the dumbest coaching I’ve ever heard of.
read what he said in his post game presser

I heard it, he basically didn’t have enough information to know if it was a pick for sure or not and didn’t want to risk using a timeout so early, which is reasonable. That was more to the idea that he 100% knew it was a pick and could’ve challenged but didn’t to teach his team to overcome adversity.

It means they can't really talk ish about it. That Willy Wonka, Oh really? meme comes to mind.
Day was whining about it in the post-game presser, saying they were both grabbing each other, which is total crap. Look at it again.

Haha but I’m sure Ohio State fans will whine and cry all about it!
They were on the way out of Autzen. Couldn't believe they lost to such a 'dumb team' as one fan said . So I guess the moral of the story is that it's better to be dumb than good. Right??

Amazing win! Gabriel balled out and the D held its own without Burch.

Just imagine how good these Ducks could be when some of our guys get healthy. Burch, Florence, Bedford... there is some serious production on the sidelines.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

I was thinking that as well. It's only a 5 yard penalty, at that point, seems worth it because of the time left.

Doesn't the ref have to blow the whistle for the ball to be dead before you can call a timeout? Thus, it doesn't matter that the QB made contact with the ground with 1 second left. The ref needs to blow the play dead but the QB needs to complete* his slide first. This wasn't a first down so the clock keeps rolling.

Yes. Folks are used to out-of-bounds plays where the clock should stop as soon as the ball/player is out. It's not so automatic here. The ref has to blow the play dead, the coach or player has to call timeout. That isn't immediate.

Everything I've read was that this should be a dead ball foul. Are illegal substitution rules different for college?

So I believe a big reason why it wasn't a dead ball foul was because Oregon snuck him on at the last second and Ref's are human and have to count players. I know I have seen some games where Ref's have blown a play dead because they were able to count the 12 players and the reason was something like "12 on the field during the immediacy of the snap" ie, that 12th guy isn't running off the field in that moment.

The other aspect of this play is that Jabarr is playing with Single help over the top but he still comes up with a clutch PBU, otherwise they likely decline the penalty and accept the catch which would have put them back in their kickers range based on his previous kick. I've read that Buddy Ryan used to do it as a goalline/end of half scenario where the Defense is essentially trying to make it come down to 1 play vs 2-3 chances.

It doesn't count, but Oregon defeated then #3 MeatChicken at Autzen in 2003... Oregon wasn't ranked at the time, but my ears rang for 3 days after that game.
Autzen Stadium... Where great teams go to die...Hard!

Not sure if one penalty is a dead ball penalty, google was not clear enough for me to understand. But, the call on the field was an illegal substitution, not 12 men on the field. Probably what 07 was saying by stating “they snuck him on the field late”.
