The Other Guys (the only guys) - Week 13

Post by StevensTechU »

No Ducks game. Big game is obviously #5 Indiana @ #2 Ohio State. First non-Oregon Big Ten game all year that I've truly been interested in.

Friday, 11/22
#24 UNLV @ SJSU, 7pm - Underrated talent level. Nick Nash at SJSU is one of the best WR in college football. UNLV is a darn good team and I would take them on a neutral field against South Carolina.

Saturday, 11/23
#9 Ole Miss @ Florida, 9am - Florida is peaking and Ole Miss has shown they aren't a consistent performer.
#13 SMU @ Virginia, 9am - Virginia is capable of the upset on their best day, which would potentially send Clemson and Miami to conference championship.
#4 Penn State @ Minnesota, 12:30 - Minny is frisky. Penn State is built to beat average Big Ten teams, but you never know, since Wisconsin gave them a run.
#14 BYU @ #21 Arizona State, 12:30 - I remember telling an ASU friend that I wish Dilly didn't take the ASU job when he did because it was a hopeless situation in the post-Herman Edwards years. Throw in that ASU loses its two best returners - QB Jaden Rashada and WR Elijah Badgers - and it's beyond impressive (and also says a bit about the quality of the Big 12) what that team is doing this year.
#16 Colorado @ Kansas - Similar to Ole Miss/Florida, the underdog is at home and peaking at the right time. I personally want to see a G5 player in Ashton Jeanty win the Heisman, so I hope Travis Hunter gets burned or run over a few times in this game. (No ill will toward Hunter, he seems like a fantastic kid)
#19 Army @ #6 Notre Dame - The greatest land-based fighting force in the world against a bunch of Irish? Grab your popcorn.
#25 Illinois @ Rutgers - Illinois winning helps the top 4 Big Ten teams by proxy.
USC @ UCLA - UCLA wins, we all win.

An aside: This is the first year in quite a long time where there is a healthy conversation about whether the southeastern conference is or is not the best conference in college football.

This to me is why we need more non-conference matchups, especially later in the season. We have no idea how Ole Miss would actually match up against a B1G team like Penn State.

And the best part of this season is for the first time ever we’re really gonna know. How exciting to actually have it proved out on the field.

If UCLA wins and then USC loses to Notre Dame, USC fails to even make a bowl game

I'm watching a recording of Indiana vs. washington this morning to familiarize myself with their team. washington is a good just not great team - there's NFL talent, but they just can't put it together - so I think they're a good barometer for how Indiana does against a talented team. The backup QB played in this game and won 31-17 nonetheless, so a solid victory where they made plays all over the place. They may not be a top 5 team in the country, but they're a top 12 one.

While watching, I found myself looking up the players who kept making plays. So many JMU transfers. That 2023 JMU team that only lost one regular season game (OT against Appalachian State) must've been very good, because many of those same guys are getting it done in the Big Ten.

I think it's funny (sad really) that they are already bashing the new expanded playoff, mostly due to having to give spots to teams like Boise that have earned it over the mid SEC teams that thought they should get 5 teams in.

Systems designed to rely on voters & rankings will always be arbitrary including the schedule strength based on voters & rankings.

These expanded conferences have only made matters worse IMO. Just builds in more opportunity for voters to put their arbitrary thumb on the scale.

All the SEC talking heads are trying to talk up 3-loss SEC teams for the CFP over someone like Indiana or Penn State. Figures they'd do everything to protect their golden goose.

The SEC wonks can say that but the playoff committee seedings so far indicate they aren't listening.

The BCS robbed us of a real shot a the Natty in 2002.

TPTB will always keep their thumb on the scale if the system is built for voters to decide who is in and who is out!
