CFP Quarterfinal Rose Bowl: Oregon vs Ohio State (Jan. 1, Wed 2 PM ESPN)

Of all the opponents to play first. Sheesh.

Well, the Rose Bowl is the Grandaddy of them all. Oregon was likely going to have to play Ohio State eventually in these playoffs. I don't think anyone else was going to beat them. Hopefully Coach Lanning has another bag of tricks ready. I'm glad Ohio State has to travel at least.

Ohio State is good, but Oregon is its equal. Just look at the first game, a one-point shootout win. I think this game will also be a shootout with our D getting enough stops to pull it out. Hopefully we don't get hosed by the refs this time.

Unfortunately, Chip and Ryan Day seem to have figured out that they have great receivers. I was hoping they would stay stubborn.

The Tennessee defense has been VERY disappointing today. I have to imagine Oregon’s front seven will pressure Howard more than this and the secondary won’t let it be so easy for the Ohio State passing game. But when Ohio State’s offense is clicking on all cylinders they’re ridiculously scary.

Ohio State spotted weaknesses in their defense that led to those 3 quick TDs. It was almost an evenly matched game after that, but that fast start put Tennessee in a hole they couldn't get out of. I thought they might have a chance to make a game of it when they pulled closer at 21-10, but the Buckeyes took control again and put it away.

Regarding getting pressure on the QB, am I mistaken or didn't both Bassa and Burch miss that first game? If so, that could have a major impact on their offense.

Also, if they have players who are injured, I could see the coaches trying to exploit that as much as possible.

To me, it comes down to two options. Stop the pass or stop the run. We can't allow their receivers to constantly get open. We have to limit the amount of explosion plays they get. I think keeping pressure on Will Howard is the best way to approach it. He can't throw if he's on his back.

We can also help ourselves by establishing a balanced offense but focus on running the ball as much as possible in order to keep their offense off the field.

It should be a great game. I sure hope the Ducks can pull it out.

I think the players reaction to watching Penn State and Ohio State crush teams yesterday is "just wait until you watch us."

There is a mental side of the game that is often over-looked and I think we're going to be just fine and we'll play with confidence whereas a game like that for OSU will lead to hubris.

Bassa played and had an interception in the first quarter that the officials conveniently said wasn’t an interception.

I think the triple mismatch with the chrome helmet, green jersey, and white pants are what's causing some issues for a few people. This is a combo that doesn't sound good on paper but ends up working in real life.

there's just no reason to pull something out that resembles the 2010 rose bowl. It didn't look amazing either. That era of jerseys were my favorite but the combo was mid.

Lets be honest Tennessee was very overrated.

So we lose home field advantage for neutral in this matchup, but we gain back Burch and having Holden for the entire game as long as he doesn't spit on someone. Those are both big boosts.

Have we lost anyone that won't be playing this game? I thought OSU had lost some offensive linemen for the season since we last saw them?

The one thing that gave me pause was Saban on GameDsy breaking down all the ways Kotelnicki created blown coverages and bad run fits against us in the B1G Championship. Chip wrote the book on that and he’s fully capable of recreating that.

On the other hand, we’ve had a chance to get healthy, “go to the doctor” via film and have had an extra 2 weeks to scheme up.

The one advantage we have is Dan has proven to be completely comfortable in deep water. Ryan Day is not.

I may drive up to Ilani and throw down a $100 on the Buckeyes if the line moves to -1. That way if we lose I’ll at least push or win some $$$ to deal with the heartache.

Tennessee, like most non-elite teams in college football, are very mediocre on the road. Ohio State approached that First Round game at The Shoe like an NBA team would coming home down 0-2 for a must-win Game 3 -- there was really no chance they were going to lose that game.

Can they beat us in Pasadena? Absolutely.

Is Oregon also being disrespected right now? 100%.

I think the two best teams in college football are squaring off in the Quarterfinals and I'd rather play the Buckeyes in Pasadena, rather than Dallas or Atlanta later down the road.

And yet they lost. In a stadium 1000+ miles closer to their home. Chip is great. UO punished Meeechigan on their own field, where the Fuckeyes couldn’t score 2 touchdowns against them at the shoe. Going to be a great game, but my money is on Gabriel being more consistent than Howard.
