Brian Michalowski seemed pretty hard set on not finding LBs in the portal. Which I think is a little stubborn? I do like that he wants to build bottom up, but if the right opportunity appeared in the Transfer Portal, it would be unwise to ignore it.

He also seems pretty prideful on some of his development. And if I'm being honest, LB play has never stood out as exceptional, especially when I see elite LB play on other teams.

In fairness, he's only truly been the ILB coach for 1 season, so hard to gauge his developmental abilities too much. I thought Boettcher is a case of a guy that improved significantly in that one year. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and the Ducks have a good amount of young talent at the position, so we could see some guys show significant improvement this year, between Jackson, Williams, Mixon (who has seemingly gotten high praise this offseason), Platt and Mothudi. Given Boettcher and Jackson are returning as starters to go along with those promising young guys, I'm not sure there's a lot of room for an ILB from the portal.

A lot has been made about the declining importance of the running back (at the NFL level), but I would say that the linebacker position has undergone a similar reduction in value. At the college level, you're more likely to see 2 linebackers on the field than 4. I still have an odd emotional attachment to quality linebacker play, but it just honestly is not as important as it used to be.

We went 13-0 last season with a converted 3* safety and a walk-on. I don't think development is an issue, but we will see how these RS freshman(all high level recruits) pan out, as that will be a better judge.

Folks, catch me up. Who has stood out in the early going? I'm just tuning in.

My thoughts:

The DL got the better of the OL nearly the entire game and all the QBs faced significant pressure.

Kenyon Sadiq looked like an All American.

Dakorien Moore looks like he will live up to the hype. Same with Dillon Gresham.

Jayden Limar seems to have regained a step. Makes me think he was dinged up last year.

Really excited about Akili Smith Jr. He played really well and did not look a true freshman early enrollee.

Dante Moore faced a lot of pressure and still made some plays. INT on the last play of the game, his team needed a touchdown and his throw was intercepted a little short of the end zone. He needed to take the risk there, just would've liked to see a better throw.

Offord had a really nice pass breakup in the endzone.

OLine looked really really bad, definitely concerning after last season. Part of me just wants to believe the DLine played really well but I think the reality is the OLine drastically needs to improve in pass protection.

Whether it’s Moore or Novasad starting there is a lot of talent but we’ll probably have some growing pains, hopefully it doesn’t cost Oregon games that they shouldn’t lose. Though honestly, part of me thought at times Moga looked better than both of them, and his elite speed does add an element that opposing defenses need to account for.

Everyone else on offense looked really good IMO, there was a bad drop by Malik Benson but I’m thinking he’ll be more of a depth guy as the WR room is absolutely stacked.

Defense looked really good, particularly the CB’s. I’m excited to see the young talented secondary this season! They showed reason to be optimistic. I personally didn’t see anything too concerning with the defense but I wasn’t able to watch the entire game yet due to leaving early with a 5 year old that couldn’t hang for the entire game.
