While somewhat desperate, it's not a terrible move. Texas state has a cheap buyout, and it gets the the Pac-12/8 into Texas with a school that has been making strides to improve their football program. Having programs in Southern Cal, and now Texas could be enough to lure other schools into joining the rebuilt conference. Add to it that they have Gonzaga as very strong basketball program.

I did, it was there #2 option behind UTEP. Options really were UTEP, TXST, UTSA and NMSU. Utep would have been a home run the next two would be fine, NMSU is a disaster walking.UOducksTK1 wrote: Mon Jun 23, 2025 12:14 pm https://sports.yahoo.com/college-sports ... 16422.html

Re: Pac-12 to add Texas State?
The only home runs are Memphis and Tulane, which they've been rejected by, and the rest of those options make you question why they aren't just joining the Mountain West. Is Texas State or UTEP more competitive and better for viewership than schools like Hawai'i and New Mexico? Pretty indistinguishable, potentially worse.Zyme wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 4:51 pmI did, it was there #2 option behind UTEP. Options really were UTEP, TXST, UTSA and NMSU. Those teams give the pac12 a footprint in Texas, and Texas state has seen a significant improvement in their football program. The school has started putting money into the program over the last few years, and it's paying off for them.StevensTechU wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 5:51 pmThe only home runs are Memphis and Tulane, which they've been rejected by, and the rest of those options make you question why they aren't just joining the Mountain West. That sounds a lot like getting Rutgers to "capture the NYC market."squintsdd wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 6:32 pmThose teams give the pac12 a footprint in Texas, and Texas state has seen a significant improvement in their football program. Re: Pac-12 to add Texas State?
Well, Texas state just invested $35+ into their football program. Nearly $150 million into athletics in the past 3 years, and I believe they're now the largest school in the Pac 12. I don't think Rutgers could make those claims when they joined the Big10.StevensTechU wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 7:23 pmThat sounds a lot like getting Rutgers to "capture the NYC market."squintsdd wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 6:32 pmThose teams give the pac12 a footprint in Texas, and Texas state has seen a significant improvement in their football program. Name me 3 current or former Texas State players in football or basketball that a casual fan would know and I'll shut up.squintsdd wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 8:14 pmWell, Texas state just invested $35+ into their football program. Re: Pac-12 to add Texas State?
We're talking about a sun belt school making a move to the new pac12, not a team making the leap to the B1G or SEC. Now if the pac12 had stayed largely intact, I would agree that this is a reach, but it didn't, and everything I've said has been true.StevensTechU wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 8:30 pmName me 3 current or former Texas State players in football or basketball that a casual fan would know and I'll shut up.squintsdd wrote: Wed Jul 02, 2025 8:14 pmWell, Texas state just invested $35+ into their football program. As you said, Tulane or Memphis would've been ideal, but they said no. Why didn't they just join the MWC? Maybe for the same reasons that several of the top teams chose to leave it.

Re: Pac-12 to add Texas State?
I tricked you because I'm going to shut up either way, as this has carried on longer than I want already.
The value of a school in the modern era is how many eyeballs they'll attract. Oregon has few alumni and is in a small state that it splits with another school, yet is one of the most valuable properties in the country. If you could get Nielsen to give you data, they'd tell you that an Oregon game is watched 1) Mostly by people with no affiliation to the state or school, 2) People with some affiliation to the state or school but aren't alumni 3) alumni, in that order, and where the first two groups are far bigger than the last. People growing up in Texas who didn't go to Texas State do not care about the Bobcats. They won't be a rating boon. They're the 10th most attractive school in a state where the attention gets sucked up by the top 1-2 schools. Hawai'i would get better ratings than Texas State. So all that said, this move puts the new Pac-12 closer in line with the Mountain West than it does the Big 12, and is a sign that they made some tactical errors.

Re: Pac-12 to add Texas State?
In 2024 Texas state had a higher viewership than Hawai'i, not by much, but it was higher, they also had the 2nd highest views of the G5 bowls with 1.5 millions viewers, while Hawai'i didn't even make it to a bowl game. I think all the schools that the Pac 12 was after before Hawai'i actually had higher viewership than Hawai'iStevensTechU wrote: Thu Jul 03, 2025 10:54 am I tricked you because I'm going to shut up either way, as this has carried on longer than I want already.

Re: Pac-12 to add Texas State?
I see we're moving the goal posts. I just informed you that you were wrong about viewership, so I'm not sure what your argument is now. If a team in a weaker conference, with an even worse tv deal, going against lesser opponents can get more viewers than Hawai'i. I think they'll do just fine in a new pac12 with new money, and a better tv deal, on top of the money they're already pushing into the program.StevensTechU wrote: Thu Jul 03, 2025 11:36 am Lmk those time slots, opponents, counter programming, and broadcast channels.

Edit*: If you would like to polish a turd because think it's a hit as long as a school has "Texas" in the name, knock yourself out.squintsdd wrote: Thu Jul 03, 2025 2:32 pmI see we're moving the goal posts.
