I'd like to see an earn it by conference type if situation with 4, 3, 3, 3 autobids, a G5 autobid for highest ranked and 2 at large. The initial 4 only going to the conference of the previous years national champion. I think this would foster more competition.
I think there may be a solid case for expansion to 16 teams if the SEC moves to a 9 game schedule from their current 8. There'll be several quality teams beating each other up every week and some may be better than the champion from a different conference.
Although the Big-10 got much stronger with the recent addition of Oregon, UW, USC and UCLA, as well as having Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, etc they're still not as talented top to bottom as the SEC.
Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, etc are all regularly 9-10 game per season winners. Teams like Auburn, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Florida and others are usually strong teams, as well. That would be a brutal 9 game schedule.
One thing the SEC did was schedule a cupcake team later in the season. I'm sure that was by design so they could rest their players for the home stretch. It was almost like having a second bye week. I think all conferences should consider this and shorten the preseason from 4 to 3 games.
Just thinking out loud.
Thoughts?
