Do we deserve to be ranked 8th?

Post by UOducksTK1 »

Looking at our resume, we have 0 quality wins. A win over a 4-2 Northwestern team is currently our greatest feat (Looking at their schedule, they'll likely finish 6-6).

What do you think?

I think that Penn State still counts as a quality win. They were a very good team going in, Oregon just broke them. Extra points apply too for traveling east to the biggest, bestest game atmosphere ever...

I think you're over using hindsight if you're valuing the Northwestern win greater than the Penn State win.

I think my main point is that there is no quality win anymore on our schedule so far. Whether we like it or not, this is the perception.

We broke Penn State. Had they won, they’d have beaten UCLA and NW. That team never emotionally recovered.

Our strength of schedule will suffer because Penn State has completely flamed out and both OSUs are among the worst teams in the country, but I anticipate this team will still play 5-6 bowl teams - Indiana, Northwestern, Iowa, USC, washington, and maybe Minnesota. I've been thinking that even a 10-2 Oregon would make the playoffs, but if they lose to USC then that will be an 0-2 record against top 25 teams and that would be a terrible look. If the loss is against washington to end the year, that could also take them out. If it's at Iowa but wins against the others, I'd feel slightly inclined to say they get in.

Yes, with Lannings guidance the team dominates over Rutgers and their season continues to roll. We got beat by a very good, mature team and our weaknesses were exposed as a young “rebuilding” team.

Who has a quality win, who is ahead of us not named Indiana?

Ohio St? Texas is just like PSU
Bama? UGA is quality but not what they have been
Miami? ND and fsu are fools gold

I mean whether we like it or not, all three of those teams have a top 20 win. Obviously Alabama is probably having the best resume right now for one loss teams with a road win at Georgia.

Texas isn’t top 20, in reality. And ND shouldn’t be top 25 when SC is finished with them

Coaches have Texas at #17.

But yes it's early. Unfortunately I don't see many teams left on our schedule to help fodder our SOS. Maybe Washington or USC? But they'd likely be fringe top 25 teams at best.

SC is 20, and will be top 15 once they beat ND.

Ultimately, I don't think it matters what we're ranked (and I like this aspect of the new college football landscape). 10-2 or better and we probably get in. If the team keeps playing like they did against Indiana, we might finish 8-4. If they maintain their confidence, we all remember Ohio St won a natty when they finished 10-2. Gotta peak in November/January. I suspect the team will continue to grow and prove to be a contender.

As far as where we should be ranked, I feel like we still need a few more games to judge how strong this team is. Oklahoma St and Oregon St were so much worse than expected, it's difficult to make an accurate assessment. Don't really learn anything from FCS games. Same thing is probably true of Penn State as well--though that has less to do with talent, and more to do with the psychology of the whole 'James Franklin loses big games' thing. Northwestern is probably exactly what we expect, and the team handled that well. But it's not a lot to go on at the moment.

I am still excited to watch the rest of the games. Even if it turns out to be a bit more of a rebuilding year than we expected after the first few games.

We are halfway through the season and Miami just lost to an unranked team. This is why you don’t make threads after UO loses to arguably the 2 team in America

We all know MC teams will shat the bed at least twice a year, and its still satisfying to watch.
