I agree with OF4L on both.
Moore’s confidence is so up and down. Dude looks so relaxed he could take a nap while 110,000 white-clad fans are screaming for blood in a 2OT game against an elite roster and elite DC.
But then…Dude gets any kind of pressure or hit on the first series and he just gets all frazzled unless Stein really forcefully gets his confidence back (see: Rutgers).
I have been wondering the same thing about Matayo. It would be nice if someone with access to the all-22’s and x-o knowledge could chime in.

I talked to people that went to the game this morning (I could have gone but my sick father in law is visiting this week and my daughter has hand foot and mouth, so didn’t want to risk it) and it sounds like the game was way more wet than the broadcast showed. People at the game said it was thick rain all game long and even if you had rain gear on you were getting soaked as rain was falling for people’s backs. I didn’t realize how much of a factor the weather played so given that I have to admit my criticism of Stein and Moore wasn’t warranted during the game.
Sometimes the weather has a different plan and you have to adjust and just win, no matter the opponent, and it happened to be against a really bad team with a really good run defense.

In the second half they started giving Wisconsin a heavy dose of man/duo style runs and a lot less zone blocking. Simplifying the run game seems to help both the OL and the RB (especially Davison who can just run through the assigned gap on the play like a freight train).
I like Stein but sometimes he out thinks himself.

Geoff Schwartz posted video of one of Moore’s passes that missed in the end zone and you see the ball completely hook left in the air. Beyond just being wet, the wind was also a factor and certainly limited what could be done in the air. All the more impressive that they were able to run for over 200 yards against a good run D.

The fact that Wiscy has a great run defense and knew runs were coming says a lot.
As I mentioned earlier, Fickell said we made an adjustment they couldn’t find answers for.
That should be taken as a positive.
Also, had Thieneman not slipped/tripped I think he intercepts that. He tracked it, had ball awareness and was trying to get into position and slipped. That would have put them at 150 yards of offense and no points.
I’m not trying to be blue skies but there is some context and nuance with this game.
Personally I hope the “negative noise” grows as Iowa approaches in 2 weeks. We have seen what Dan can do with a pissed off team in a game that has their full attention.

Oregon still ranked 6th. Part of me wondered if Ole Miss would hop us. Glad they didn’t!

We got back to really basic hat on a hat runs. Pregnon and Poncho were lighting up there linebackers in the 2nd half. I think there is growing evidence the zone blocking schemes we use, for whatever reason, are not our OL's forte. The man/duo concepts they run with Dierre and Davison are much more consistent and productivebdkipe wrote: Sun Oct 26, 2025 5:03 pm The fact that Wiscy has a great run defense and knew runs were coming says a lot.

Is it possible they struggle with zone blocking due to limited time together with 4 new starters, 3 of which came from the portal? I’m no expert and this does seem like a physically imposing OLine, but just wonder if chemistry plays a big role in how successful an OLine is with zone blocking and that’s why they aren’t as good at it.spacefrog13x wrote: Sun Oct 26, 2025 5:33 pmWe got back to really basic hat on a hat runs. The problem with the weather narrative is that the weather was fine to start the game and that’s when Dante Moore and the offense struggled the most. We saw the most success when the weather turned terrible and our walk on quarterback was playing.

I would rephrase as we struggled the most when we tried to throw our way to victory and running plays involved slow developments behind the line of scrimmage, and succeeded when the run game became more north-and-south.dthomas=ddixon wrote: Mon Oct 27, 2025 8:26 am The problem with the weather narrative is that the weather was fine to start the game and that’s when Dante Moore and the offense struggled the most. I'm not usually on to come on here and complain about playcalls, but the pass-centric game plan when meteorologists said all week that it would be rainy was baffling. Even when the offense became more run-focused, the ball was still put in harm's way with the amount of pitches and shovels involved. I didn't love it.

^^^^ this. One would think with the season half over that the team would have their timing down and be playing as an efficient unit. That said, it has been a good good run these last years.

First quarter:
1st Drive: 2 runs, 2 passes
2nd Drive: 2 runs, 4 passes
3rd Drive: Trick play, 2 passes
4th Drive: 2 runs, 4 passes
No OC is perfect. I'm annoyed here because having a pass-centric attack in wet conditions is just so basic.
Stein also probably goes away from the run too quickly. If the first down run isn't successful, he has a heavy tendency to spend the next two plays passing.

I’m curious your thoughts on this complaint of mine, that it fees like Stein runs too many formations/packages and it just feels like at times the offense is more focused on being set correctly rather than playing football. I know sometimes it works great and Stein looks like a genius/mad scientist, but so many times we’ve seen a mistake kill a drive. It also bugs me how long it takes to ensure the proper formations/packages when a drive is going well, it seems to take all momentum/rhythm from the offense.StevensTechU wrote: Mon Oct 27, 2025 8:48 amI would rephrase as we struggled the most when we tried to throw our way to victory and running plays involved slow developments behind the line of scrimmage, and succeeded when the run game became more north-and-south.dthomas=ddixon wrote: Mon Oct 27, 2025 8:26 am The problem with the weather narrative is that the weather was fine to start the game and that’s when Dante Moore and the offense struggled the most. I’m seeing people saying that in the second half Stein just mostly ran duo and allowed the OLine to just block the person in front of them, and once they did that Wisconsin couldn’t really stop them and overall that is somewhat impressive cause while Wisconsin sucks, they do have a good front seven. I think we have a physically imposing OLine but one that lacks chemistry.
Do you feel my complaint is warranted? Does Stein need to stick to less formations? I just feel we have a very strong OLine that lacks chemistry, a QB with a golden arm but is young and lacks composure, unguardable receivers, and a freak of nature at TE, for me, I just feel like we don’t need any sort of “trickery” or pre-snap eye candy from Stein, just go out there and dare the defense to stop us helmet to helmet, man on man. Almost feels to me like Stein thinks he has to outsmart the opposing DC but as a result sometimes he only outsmarts himself.
