Re: Scrimmage highlights/lowlights
Bottom line is that with Masoli we put up huge numbers last year and he progressed with each and every game culminating in MVP at the Holiday Bowl. The guy is a gamer and one scrimmage is not going to dislodge him from the starting job.

Re: Scrimmage highlights/lowlights
(just blabbing here because I am bored) But what you say is true, and this is coming from one who is a big Masoli fan, but a 2nd scrimage with a simular outcome, might lend itself to a QB controversy. Otherwise, the talk of "competition" we have been hearing about in "every practice" = may the best man win...etc. will start to fall on deaf ears and will undermine the effectivness of the statement. Players will start losing the fire if repuation is all that matters. I don't think we are anywhere close to that yet regarding Masoli/Costa, but if Costa keeps it up....?EncinitasDuck wrote:Bottom line is that with Masoli we put up huge numbers last year and he progressed with each and every game culminating in MVP at the Holiday Bowl. Again, just talking here, not making a statement regarding this issue (yet at least)

Masoli will get the start. Only him getting hurt will prevent that. He has earned it.

So we're taking one PRACTICE(thats all a scrimmage is) where Costa did a little better than Masoli & starting to wonder who is better? Seriously?
Costa was going up against the #2 D. You think Masoli wouldn't have done better if he was throwing against Scott Grady instead of Walter Thurmond & TJ Ward? It's one practice. Masoli is the man & Costa will NEVER beat him out because of one good PRACTICE.

Re: Scrimmage highlights/lowlights
The d-line looks fine, although they are very undersized with Bair (weight wise...yes, I know he is tall) starting at tackle and Rowe at defensive end. Combine that with the smaller linebackers and a converted corner starting at rover and, needless to say, this defense is definitely going to be a unit that relies on speed rather than size and strength. Frankly, they look more like a defense you are accustomed to seeing teams like Boise State throw out there. Undersized but fast.gregspechtismyhero wrote:Any word on how the D and O lines have looked so far?
The o-line has a lot of work to do. That unit better stay relatively healthy this season (not sure those odds are good since a couple of the best o-linemen are injury prone) or it is going to be a long year for Duck fans.

But the difference in this equasion is that at one point last season Costa was solidly listed as the starter, so he is not some new young freshman to be hyped about. If his knee were to have held up last year, I bet your tune would be completely different right now. Perhaps Costa would be the one on several Heisman list too? I also know it was a practice scrimage and like someone else mentioned, this dosent necessarliy lower Masoli, it just elevates Costa closer to him in my eyes.dthomas=ddixon wrote:So we're taking one PRACTICE(thats all a scrimmage is) where Costa did a little better than Masoli & starting to wonder who is better? Masoli is still the guy and the sky is the limit with him, but you have to give credit where credit is due regarding Costa. He has earned and deserves some serious respect and consideration with all he has done for the Ducks. From all accounts, he looks very sharp this pre-season and has litteraly given his knee to the program - and has never given up his heart either. If we don't at least give him some consideration - knowing he was our #1 before the injury, then everything he has done to come back from his third surgery was for not.
Okay, I will get off my soap box now. I know you guys all love Costa. I just think we ought not totally dismiss him from the equasion when he has done so much to get back into it. That is not a slam on Masoli, just respect for Costa. I am proud of him for making it back this far and competing. Which I am sure is all he wants, a real chance to compete.

I love Costa too, and think he's a total stud for accomplishing what he has over the last few years... that being said, who was he listed solidly in front of last year? A bean pole, a true freshman, a guy who couldnt throw and JM who had been in camp all of two weeks....Tinfoilman wrote:But the difference in this equasion is that at one point last season Costa was solidly listed as the starter, dthomas=ddixon wrote:So we're taking one PRACTICE(thats all a scrimmage is) where Costa did a little better than Masoli & starting to wonder who is better? Costa was competing against Roper last yr....Roper. Of course he was the starter. If Costa wouldn't have gotten injured OF COURSE my tune would be different. Masoli wouldn't have played a snap & Costa would be the man(He definitely has the skills) but guess what? Costa got injured & we discovered a heisman candidate in Masoli.Tinfoilman wrote:But the difference in this equasion is that at one point last season Costa was solidly listed as the starter, so he is not some new young freshman to be hyped about. I'm really happy we still have Costa on the team, he provides really solid depth. He is not the best QB on the team though. I can't believe people take ONE PRACTICE & start to stir up a QB controversy. What about the 3-4 GAMES(These are real, they actually count) where Masoli put up insane numbers & demolished 3 really good teams? No, one scrimmage carries more weight.
It just cracks me up how easily fans are swayed back & forth. NO loyalty. A guy has one good practice & all of a suden its "Oh watch out. We may have a new QB. This guy looked good in a practice against the #2 defense, he must be better than our starter."

Let's not put the cart before the horse ... Masoli has, at times, been listed (by GoDucks.com originally) as a darkhorse for the Heisman, but he has yet to prove himself as an actual candidate.dthomas=ddixon wrote:we discovered a heisman candidate in Masoli.
I agree with everything else you said though.

Re: Scrimmage highlights/lowlights
I am not sure how to say this any clearer. Masoli shoud be the starter. And DO NOT question my loyalty. If anything where is yours? Masoli should start. THAT IS A GIVEN AND I SAID THAT SEVERAL TIMES. But don't be too quick to throw Costa under the bus as if he is just another irrelevent over hyped freshman.

Dude, I'm pretty sure we agree on this. Masoli is the man but Costa is still very good. I wasn't questioning your loyalty, I was talking about the people who after this past scrimmage are wanting Costa to be the QB & completely forgetting what Masoli did last year. Obviously you don't, you just want to see him get the respect he deserves. I feel the same way.Tinfoilman wrote:I am not sure how to say this any clearer. Masoli shoud be the starter.
