Good thing we didn't just try and talk things out during the revolutionary war. We would still be part of England and all those who brought up opposing views would have been hanged.
Let's look at this another way.

WOW, again you have not watched the video close enough. He was getting himself in position to assault Blount before Blount went after the guy with the chair. Please stop posting such ignorant comments...you are making us all dumber.

Echo...seriously are you really saying that all injustices should be talked through and that war is never justified. Come on I know that you are not that stupid.

Had Blount kept walking to the locker room, this would not even be a discussion. The fact that we, as Ducks fans, are arguing about this proves why Blount deserves his suspension. He has embarrassed our school and our program. His actions, while wearing a Ducks uniform, give us a black eye.wiseforexinvestor wrote:

I'm not in any way saying that Hout, the BSU fans in question or the guy that replayed the punch on the video board shouldn't be punished ... they should! All I am saying is that it doesn't excuse Blount's actions or change the fact that he deserves the punishment he got.

No, all this discussion proves is that we have some ignorant, sheepish fans that don't have a big enough pair to question authority. When you blindly accept authority you leave yourself wide open to be manipulated.echo31 wrote:Had Blount kept walking to the locker room, this would not even be a discussion. A scholarship is a privilege, as is playing college football ... Blount gave up that privilege. It isn't "sheepish" to expect the school to punish a student athlete for assaulting a rival student athlete, his teammate, a couple fans and one of his coaches. I applaud the school and the athletic department for sending the message that the Oregon Ducks are above those actions and refuse to become the Miami of the West.wiseforexinvestor wrote:No, all this discussion proves is that we have some ignorant, sheepish fans that don't have a big enough pair to question authority. you are such a piece of trash...I love that you're more worried about a University's image than a 22 year olds life...That black eye you speak off will go away just like any other black eye...This will change Blount's life forever...A 3 or 4 game suspension would have been more than sufficient both for punishment's sake and also for clearing up that black eye that you're oh so worried about...With that 3 or 4 game suspension there would be stipulations of things he would have to live up to...I don't know maybe you were perfect at 22 but I kinda doubt it...and you speak of just walking away...I'm sorry but you've never been a young black man having racial slurs yelled at you, neither have I, it's ignorant for you to act like that's something that's easy to just walk away from

A piece of trash, eh? Thank you! How surprising that someone that resorts to name calling also condones the actions of Blount.pudgejeff wrote:you are such a piece of trash...I love that you're more worried about a University's image than a 22 year olds life...That black eye you speak off will go away just like any other black eye...This will change Blount's life forever...A 3 or 4 game suspension would have been more than sufficient both for punishment's sake and also for clearing up that black eye that you're oh so worried about...With that 3 or 4 game suspension there would be stipulations of things he would have to live up to...I don't know maybe you were perfect at 22 but I kinda doubt it...and you speak of just walking away...I'm sorry but you've never been a young black man having racial slurs yelled at you, neither have I, it's ignorant for you to act like that's something that's easy to just walk away from
Again, Blount was given a gift when he was offered a scholarship to play football at the UofO. It was his chance to try to make it to the NFL and make millions of dollars. He screwed that up himself. He has to be responsible for his actions. I realize that he is part of what they call the "me generation" but it is time to face the fact that millions of dollars has to be be earned by more than just on the field play. He had an amazing opportunity to make millions of dollars playing a game (I wish I had the athletic gift he has) but it was never guaranteed.

at no point did I condone his actions or say he should not be punished...I am saying the punishment given is not just for the action. And saying that you are trash wasn't name calling, just an observation

Yeah, I'm trash for realizing that the University is bigger than just one kid. He still has the opportunity to get a degree and train for the NFL. That's not that bad of a punishment. I will agree that a full season suspension is harsh. Honestly, I would have expected 4-6 games. But, the decision was made to suspend him for the season. If we were to change that now it would send the wrong message about our program.pudgejeff wrote:at no point did I condone his actions or say he should not be punished...I am saying the punishment given is not just for the action. See now you finally speak either with some thought process or with your defenses down and your actual opinion...I laud that as it's tough to take down your guard and speak truly after taking a hard stance...That's my problem with the whole thing...Handing out too harsh of a punishment in this situation is a huge deal and I feel like it was handed out lightly and without much thought as it was handed out less than 24 hours after the action...And now after letting there emotions run their course and the national focus not so squarely pointed on them they are too weak to come out and say we're sorry, this was a mistake and a decision made too emotionally, as Blount did only 10 minutes after the altercation...That's just plain coward in my opinion and I feel like someone who is willing to throw his player under the bus to get the focus of the program isn't fit to be the leader of this University. Which we all know is a very different and special University in a very different and special town.

Jeff, I tend to agree with you. As some who is in Public Relations, my advice would have been to make a temperate punishment with the option of adding on more if he didn't follow through, but to make a hasty decision has now gotten them into a place of not being able to back down. It's a sad situation all the way around. Now Kelly cannot back down & not look weak. Technically, they could bring him back, but he'll look weak for doing it. They have the worst advisers sometimes.pudgejeff wrote:See now you finally speak either with some thought process or with your defenses down and your actual opinion...I laud that as it's tough to take down your guard and speak truly after taking a hard stance...That's my problem with the whole thing...Handing out too harsh of a punishment in this situation is a huge deal and I feel like it was handed out lightly and without much thought as it was handed out less than 24 hours after the action...And now after letting there emotions run their course and the national focus not so squarely pointed on them they are too weak to come out and say we're sorry, this was a mistake and a decision made too emotionally, as Blount did only 10 minutes after the altercation...That's just plain coward in my opinion and I feel like someone who is willing to throw his player under the bus to get the focus of the program isn't fit to be the leader of this University. Plus, with keeping the punishment something that LGB could have overcome would have kept him more focused on what he needed to do to make amends and produced more tangible results for him. It would have been a better teachable moment than what they now face. At this point, his mental state can't be too motivated. I know I wouldn't be.

I'm not giving up on the success of the team. Losing a good player isn't the reason that I am bothered by Blount's harsh punishment. I agree that we still have potential to be a great team this year with or without Blount.desertduck wrote:If LB had broken his leg in the Bosie State game would we be in such disaray? No, we
would just accept the fact and move forward. Geez we only lost one guy, not the whole team. We have to suck it up and make the most of it. We have some talented young kids that need some reps and good coaching to get in shape to compete. We lost a great
player, but this is no time to give up. Look at OU, they lost their starting QB and I don't think they are going to lay down and die. If we lost Masoli I'd more conserned. Just my thoughts. We are the Ducks, so lets get out there and fly.
My contention is that a less severe punishment would have been more functional for the program in the long the run and would still have sent the message needed to protect the University image, what they expect from players, etc.
I agree with MFRDuckFan. This was a knee-jerk reaction. A better, contingent situation could have been put in place that would have been more effective at giving Blount structure AND motivation to do the right things. If he failed to do that, nobody would question why he never played another game. As it is now, a lot of people are going to question why Kelly made it impossible for him to ever play another game. And he is probably going to have to answer that whether he likes it or not.

The only tweek I think I'd make in the suspension is for him to possibly play in the final 1 or 2 regular season games and the Bowl game.
