That was the one thing we lacked under CK, is beef on the lines. With Lanning, we have that. We now have "DAWGS". Lanning managed to bring SEC offensive and defensive lineman all the way up to the northwest. While we are having a great season, it may not happen this year, Lanning may need another couple years of solid recruiting, but we are right there in the mix now.

We may not win the Playoff this year, its going to be tough sledding regardless, but one thing we absolutely cannot do is blame recruiting or think that we just need "more time" if that's what happens.

I've actually thought a lot about this in the past. We can agree, with Saban retired, Georgia and Kirby Smart are the gold standard right?

2016 Smart's first year as Georgia's head coach ended with a 31–23 victory over TCU in the Liberty Bowl
2017 The Bulldogs went on to lose to Alabama in the National Championship Game 26–23
2018 The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs earned an invitation to play in the Sugar Bowl, where they lost to No. 15 Texas
2019 Georgia, ranked No. 5 entering the bowl season, beat No. 7 Baylor in the Sugar Bowl, 26–14
2020 the No. 9 Bulldogs beat No. 8 Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl, 24–21
2021 Georgia defeated No. 1 Alabama in the National Championship game, 33–18, to secure their first national championship

It took Smart 6 years as good as Georgia has been. So if Lanning doesn't get it done this year, I am fine with that. It takes time to create a culture.

As I already said, if we don't win it it this year, it's not because of recruiting needing to get better.

We could be good enough in every way to win a natty this year and still might not get it done. That's because Georgia might also be good enough. Or Ohio State. Or Texas. Or another team that's not as high on everyone's radar.

At a certain point it doesn't matter how ready and stacked you are, you still have to survive the chaos of the game (and officiating). Just think of our own trips to the big game... first time, there was an interception that wasn't, a fumble that wasn't, and then a tackle that wasn't. Second time we lose like three of our best players in the leadup to the game.

I really hope we win it this year but won't be surprised if we don't. Margins at the top are razor thin. Maybe we get there and the ball doesn't bounce our way, or maybe we play horribly but it does and we win anyway.

All I know is the grass is damn green in Eugene, I love this staff, and I love our progrum, and I do believe we'll reach the mountaintop.

Just curious, why Georgia? He’s not an alum. Not sure he has any special allegiance to Georgia.

He has repeatedly said that he feels a debt of gratitude and commitment to the place that gave him his first big opportunity. His father characterizes him as ‘incredibly loyal’.

Not saying things don’t change but Kirby is 48 years old so unless he really decides the NFL is his ultimate gig or he wins a couple more national championships and decides to walk away not sure how soon Ga opens up.

Just throwing out some grist for the mill.

That said, I think it's time for us to stop thinking about our coaches leaving for bigger jobs. This is a new era and there isn't a bigger job. Oregon is #1 in the land and in arguably the best conference. Impeccable NIL operation, huge donor support, still the best facilities with more coming -- I mean what more could we ask for? Alabama was always viewed as a (the?) top job and Saban retired because he couldn't hang with NIL.

I totally agree with you Pez and yes winning at Ga certainly does have special meaning for him. Not downplaying that in any way.

Just saying I am not certain that would be enough to lure him back. Again, I don’t know what his thoughts are. Other than his wife and family I doubt anyone here does but you make a great point, we need to focus on the here and now and he constantly says he has everything he needs to win at UO.
