As much as I liked Gabriel I really do think he had an issue of focusing on Tez, but Tez was so amazing he got away with it cause he’s almost always open. But against a secondary with a safety like Downs who is the best safety in the nation you simply can’t do that. I’m curious to see if Moore struggles with that too since it seemed like Nix did at times or if he’s able to spread the ball more effectively.

I'm glad you realize it's not so much a Gabriel issue, 'vision' is the hardest thing for a quarterback after the prerequisite physical traits. Overall, Gabriel is a heck of a quarterback. 3rd place in the Heisman race, in fact.

I was watching Todd McShay YouTube. And he said the scouts he talked to all rave about Evan, and think he will be a stud in the nfl. The only negative they say about him, is he has to mature mentally

He just seems to disappear during most games and I am always wondering if it's because Gabriel just really liked Tez, or maybe Stewart has a hard time getting separation. He is obviously a good receiver. The best thing you can say about him is that he showed out during the two games when Oregon needed him the most vs. Boise and the first time vs Ohio State.

There was lots of games that he would be wide open, and DG wouldn’t look his way. It was weird, but I also think DG couldn’t see over the OL all the time

I think this is a valid point. There were many times when there would be a player crossing the middle, or someone open downfield, that was wide open, but he never saw them

Few things about DG. His height. He had nervous feet. He was great.

After I posted that I was wondering the last time we had a QB who was really good at spreading the ball, and to me it was Mariota. Even Herbert had issues focusing on his favorite targets, but his arm talent allowed him to get away with that. I hope we don’t get so excited for Moore’s potential we forget how good of a QB Gabriel was for us.

I would say that Herbert saw the field but ultimately trusted exactly 1 person (Dillon Mitchell) to catch the ball. I don't blame him. The receivers were atrocious at holding onto the ball in those days.

I was checking Gabriel's height vs current NFL players and although Bryce Young is also 5-11, so is Kyler Murray of the Cardinals, who's a good QB when he's healthy.

You just never know. He may go either way in the NFL. A lot of it will have to do with where he ends up being drafted.

If I remember right, they lead the country in dropped passes two years in a row.

Okay, but even in the 4 games that Tez was either out or playing a diminished role due to his injury (Michigan, Maryland, Wisconsin, Washington), Stewart didn't suddenly explode in terms of production, averaging around 42 receiving yards per game. Gabriel's passing yards just went down instead, as if Tez was creating offense where it didn't exist before rather than stealing all the touches from others. I know Gabriel sometimes did not see open receivers, but there had to be another reason why the Gabriel/Stewart connection was so inconsistent. Maybe Stewart's favored routes to separation demanded more arm strength or time in the pocket.

It did seem DG preferred to throw to Stewart downfield more. There was far less short/mid game for him.

DG did drop some back shoulder dimes to EStew though in Goalline situations.

I don’t think that’s totally fair. Stewart had a big TD catch on Oregon’s opening drive against Michigan after Tez went out and had the best catch of the season (maybe in all of college football) called back due to a BS ineligible man downfield penalty. Besides that Michigan is a tough defense so hard to get much especially after Harper went down and Gabriel had no protection.

Against Maryland and Wisconsin the entire offense struggled, particularly the OLine, so the passing game really never got going at all.

Against Washington Tez was back and once against Gabriel was focusing on him, even on Tez’s TD catch Stewart was more open over the middle for an easier throw but Gabriel still threw to Tez. I’m not saying Stewart can’t get better but I think he didn’t just “disappear”, it was a combo of things including Gabriel struggling and the offense as a whole struggling with the 7th and 8th game in a row against teams off of byes.

All of those guys struggle to throw over the middle of the field, and rely heavily on their legs to extend plays and make throws outside of the pocket. Murray might be 5'8" despite what he's listed at, but he's only semi-effective because of his ability to scramble. I'd consider him a middle of the pack QB. Actually had a debate recently with a buddy and I concluded Murray isn't even a top 15 QB in the NFL. Murray is a guy that can put up fun fantasy stats, but he's never going to lead a team that will threaten to win anything of significance. I'd be surprised to him win a playoff game during his career. Young has started to come around, but obviously has had his struggles. Wilson was a bit of an anomaly back when he was younger, because of his ability to extend plays and make plays outside of structure, but he's never been great having to play within the pocket, which is why he's become a below average QB as his ability to evade pressure has diminished. Even he benefitted largely from an offense that was run heavy and an elite defense.

I think the offense definitely had limitations due to Gabriel's height, as much as I like him, which leads me to believe those same limitations will exist in the NFL. I feel like his ceiling is likely a backup.

so bad in fact we led the nation in dropped passes(50+ each year) for two years during Herbert's time here.
