I think what this game shows is that Oregon is not a legitimate contender. Even if they do manage to snag a playoff spot, which is very far from certain, they won't be going far in the post-season. I wish it were otherwise, but this team has too many holes both on the field and on the sidelines.

Defense has played well enough to win. But the offense... sheesh. I know lots of folks here like Will Stein, but I wasn't a fan last year, I definitely wasn't a fan after the Rose Bowl, and I haven't been a fan during conference play this season either. Just far too many games over the past two years where our offense craps the bed despite having elite talent. Just very little rhythm. Or it seems like our offense finds the weakness in the other team's D, but instead of attacking those weaknesses the playcalling gets cute and goes away from what works. Lanning seems pretty loyal to him, but if what we've seen over the first few conference games continues then I hope Lanning has the stones to make the right decision in the offseason.

100 percent. You can’t spew stuff about playing to the standard to the players but you don’t have the cahones to hold the coaches to that standard. Terry and stein gone please

Yeah, not sure if Dante just didn’t have time, but for whatever reason, Dante never stretched the field at all after the first quarter. I’ve always been of the thought that you at least have to throw downfield to at least attempt a completion or a PI. Moore played scared today, and his line didn’t help him at all.

So how does Oregon do what Ohio State did last year and address its weaknesses when offensive playcalling is such a huge part of that? If Will Stein could call better games, wouldn't he have done so by now?

I'm actually starting to get worried. Going all the way back to Washington, Oregon St, right up to the Rose Bowl last year, Lanning and his staff get outcoached in the biggest games. And this is starting to be consistent. When it comes time to separate Oregon from the "could be great" to great, Lanning always comes up short.

It's usually been the offense that falls short. I still feel really good about recruiting / talent, and pretty good about the defense.

This is the crux of the problem. The Ducks have serious issues both on the field and on the sidelines. The O line, particularly, is not really something that can be remedied this season, as it's really a matter of talent and skill development. We've got at least 3 portal starters, which meant this was always going to be a patchwork unit and not an elite one.

The playcalling could potentially improve, even though Stein has showed no ability or inclination to do so.

So, we're left with a team that is likely going to drop between 1 to 3 more games this season and will probably not make the playoffs. And that's okay. If we do somehow merit selection, it's going to be a very short post-season run anyway.

I don't think I am. This team is young and has significant holes that won't be filled this season. We still have to go to Iowa and to UW, both of which will be very difficult games to win. We could also easily drop the game to USC if they fail to show up. Fans thinking this team was going to replicate last season's results were always unrealistic.
