I haven't re-watched the whole game, but I did re-watch the 4th quarter. The offensive line got much better in the 4th and gave up only one or two pressures. Gabriel's height was a factor as he had some balls batted down at the line. The left side of the line got a lot better and I feel the same about Harper as I did going into the season (solid, albeit maybe not an NFL guy). Poncho, though, looks bad at guard. I have to imagine that putting him back at center and putting Strother in at right guard would be better. The defensive linemen consistently get into Poncho's chest and push him backward, sometimes taking whole hops into Gabriel's lap.

Other observations - Tez Johnson is really good. Whittington looks hesitant coming off the injury. Kobe Savage was a great pickup in the portal. Gabriel played not just good but great under the circumstances.

Hythloday came out with his podcast recapping the game. Interesting stuff. Just a few notes. Also I’m just recapping what he said, not claiming he’s the smartest person ever, just find his stuff interesting and know others do also.

1) Idaho is better than people wanted to say and Hythloday did come out with an article saying that they should be taken seriously and they’re way better than Portland State. Granted he didn’t expect the game to be that close but they shouldn’t be overlooked. They returned 8 rotational players on the DL and their end that forced the strip sack will be in the NFL.

2) He thinks both the players and coaches overlooked Idaho. He said to call the playcalling vanilla is an understatement, it was “eating ice cubes for dessert”. No misdirection, no RPO, constant short passing routes, all very basic and predictable. He wasn’t sure why, but his two hypothesis for this was either to not give up any playbook to opponents or not risk any more injuries.

3) He did talk about the OLine. He said that Conerly and Harper were acceptable, not good though. He said Pickard wasn’t bad but wasn’t the problem. He said Cornelius and particularly Poncho were significantly horrible and the sole reason for the offensive struggles. He pointed out that Poncho had an error rate of 23% which I think he said is the highest he’s ever seen for an Oregon lineman in a single game. He also wasn’t sure how to explain Cornelius’s poor performance, he said he struggled the first half of the year last season as transfers normally due but played really well by the second half of the season. What really surprised me was he did bring up that the two worst performing guys were Terry guys, and he did say this could be concern for Lanning in terms of Terry’s coaching ability. He said it’s too early to say that it IS a concern but it certainly could be.

I will respectfully disagree with the first line of #2. I don’t think the coaches in any way overlooked that game. That's not in Dan’s DNA, nor do I think he would tolerate that from any assistants.

Were some lessons learned? Hopefully!

It's easy to say and assume that Lanning wouldn't overlook them, and he wouldn't accept it from his coaches, but it's a whole other thing when it comes to the players. They're kids that have been told, and read, time and again that they're title contenders. They were given a number 3 ranking to back that up. I'm sure a large portion of them walked into that game thinking it would be a cake walk.

Listening to the QB11 podcast, he is convinced the two illegal formation penalties on Cornelius were completely bogus and the incorrect calls, and he also noted that because of those penalties he forced himself to line up way too tight which led to the strip sack. Also on the strip sack Sadiq was wide open for a TD and Gabriel was in motion to throw to him. QB11 did say the TE blocking was also bad and largely to blame.

Anyone else that knows football well know if those two penalties on Cornelius were bad calls?

If Harmon didn’t angrily break their starting QB I’d say they’d cruise their way to an FCS championship. I bet their coach will get an FBS job soon.

That DE that abused Cornelius also had 3 sacks against Wyoming. Kid may just be legit.

I seem to remember someone calling that "rat poison".

Meanwhile... Idaho's D still doing big things.

Gotta give it to them, they are playing FBS quality football.
